Swedish-based casino games developer Play’n GO has been granted a license to supply online gaming content in Alberta as the Canadian province prepares to launch a regulated online gambling market in July.

The license was issued by the regulator that oversees Alberta online casinos, the Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Commission (AGLC), and enables the company to provide online casino games to licensed operators in the province. It also expands Play’n GO’s presence in Canada, where the company already operates in Ontario and Quebec.

The company said it has aligned its technology and gaming portfolio with Alberta’s regulatory standards in preparation for launch, and that a group of game titles is currently undergoing certification.

“Being granted a license in Alberta is another important step in our North American growth journey and further strengthens our presence in Canada,” said Magnus Olsson, CCO of Play’n GO. "Regulated markets are the foundation of our business, and Alberta represents an exciting opportunity to expand our footprint in a jurisdiction that shares our commitment to high standards, player protection and long‑term sustainability."

The Alberta approval comes as the province moves toward becoming the second Canadian jurisdiction to operate a regulated online casino and sports betting market. Ontario sports betting and Ontario online casinos launched their regulated markets in April 2022 and currently host more than 30 licensed sportsbook operators.

Alberta’s regulated market, including Alberta sports betting, is scheduled to go live on July 13, according to updates from provincial regulators. The launch will introduce both online casino gaming and sports betting through licensed private-sector operators alongside the government-run PlayAlberta platform.

Gaming firms register ahead of Alberta launch

A total of 28 online gaming operators have since registered in Alberta ahead of the market launch. The list includes BallyBetBetMGMBetRiversCaesarsDraftKingsFanDuelPointsBet Canada, and theScore Bet. Several of these operators have already opened customer registrations.

The AGLC also confirmed that additional operators could still enter the market as gray-market companies transition into the regulated system, and that 22 gaming service providers had registered as of May 1, including IGT and Light & Wonder.

The launch timing also coincides with major sporting events, including the final stages of the FIFA World Cup and the Canadian Football League season. The World Cup final is scheduled for July 19 at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., while the Calgary Stampeders are set to host the Montreal Alouettes on July 18.

The Alberta government has since projected that regulated online gambling could generate approximately CAD$100 million in annual tax revenue. It has also updated its advertising policies to allow licensed operators to advertise on Google platforms ahead of the launch.
