Since the launch of legal sports betting, FanDuel has grown into one of the largest global betting companies, expanding from a presence in just one state to over two dozen.

Because the best sports betting sites must comply with changing laws across state lines, geolocation is a major factor in earning licenses and staying in good standing with local regulators. FanDuel announced on Monday the extension of a partnership with GeoComply, a company that it has been linked with for 13 years. The partnership with GeoComply helps FanDuel stay on the right side of those licensing rules.

The company provides advanced geolocation techniques to the biggest names in the sports betting industry beyond FanDuel, including DraftKingsBetMGM, and others, as well as some of the best Ontario sports betting apps. Using multi-signal triangulation and real-time tracking, GeoComply ensures bets are placed only where users are physically located and by who they say they are.

As reported by Earnings+More, the deal should allow the two “identify opportunities, solve problems and deploy new capabilities more quickly.”

The extended partnership will see GeoComply and FanDuel engineers working hand in hand to embed the technology more deeply across FanDuel's offerings, including the newly launched FanDuel Predicts.

Christian Genetski, FanDuel's President, added, "Our focus has always been on delivering a great customer experience while operating with the highest standards of integrity and compliance. We’re excited to continue working with GeoComply in the years ahead.”

FanDuel VIP incentive issues

While things are looking positive on the geolocation and player fraud fronts, FanDuel has run into some issues in other areas, namely its VIP incentives.

In the Pennsylvania sports betting market, FanDuel and DraftKings have asked a judge to throw out a lawsuit that had been filed in March by the Public Health Advocacy Institute on behalf of Terry Thompson and Christopher Sage. The two men allege they lost nearly $2 million, with Thompson reporting a loss of at least $1.5 million of his own. That case drew public attention when it emerged that Philadelphia Phillies slugger Bryce Harper recorded a video via Cameo for FanDuel and sent it to Thompson in 2024.

For his part, Harper has said he didn't know the personalized video would be sent to someone dealing with gambling addiction.

While FanDuel and DraftKings fight to have the case thrown out, lawmakers have also spoken out. Three members of Congress have called on MLB and its players' association to overhaul the rules that allowed the personalized video to reach a bettor who says he struggled with a gambling addiction.
