I knew the first part, but don't think I've thought of the second. Your post made me think of looking at the earth's surface with super-magnified scoping of sorts; even if I couldn't see life, I imagine seeing land masses in different locations and shapes would be quite weird in a cool way.

I first thought, "No way, I know it's low, but there must be more annual shark deaths than -that-"; I do some quick Googling and found that, while the shark attack count is much greater, shark deaths average even less than 10 a year worldwide, heh.

Just researched on this one too. Allegedly, there are just two jellyfish species that don't die of old age, which they accomplish by changing back to a youthful form. It'd be cool if scientists could find something in this useful to humans in the future, but I'm guessing that's unlikely...

If I had to be an academic and I wasn't interested in frosh stroking I would definitely become an entomologist.

              The Bombardier Beetle

"When threatened, bombardier beetles spray the suspected attacker with a boiling hot mixture of caustic chemicals. The predator hears a loud pop, then finds itself bathed in a cloud of toxins reaching 212° F (100° C). Even more impressive, the bombardier beetle can aim the poisonous eruption in the direction of the harasser."

The sentence "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" uses every letter in the English language.

                      111,111,111 x 111,111,111 = 12,345,678,987,654,321

"I am." is the shortest complete sentence in the English language.

Back in 1962, the U.S. blew up a hydrogen bomb, creating what might be the greatest fireworks spectacular ever. People in Hawaii gathered on rooftops, sipping drinks, as they watched a radioactive rainbow display in the night sky.

                                              The Wrath of The Killdozer

Marvin Heemeyer of Granby, Colorado was a profoundly frustrated muffler repair man. In the late 1990s–after years of protests, petitions, and town meetings–it became obvious to the 52-year-old that he was entwined in a gross miscarriage of justice. His business was ruined by some shady zoning changes, and Heemeyer contended that mayor and city council were corrupt. Even as he was forced to give up his legal fight and sell his land, he hatched one last plan to secretly retool his muffler shop to serve a single malevolent purpose: to construct a machine that would allow him to exact his revenge upon those who had wronged him.

                                              Heemeyer first became ....

Global military spending in 2010 was 1.6 trillion dollars. U.s. Military spending accounts for 43% of this. This is a normal trend, America usually spends slightly less than half of the world's total defense expenditure.

First off, this is my favorite thread although Dad's college girl thread comes very close.

Secondly, thank you for disabusing me of the notion that it is impossible to lick your own elbow. I have witnessed proof and stand corrected.

Thirdly, my contribution is: Cheetahs were raced at Romford greyhound stadium in 1937!

Amazing science fact: raining animals is a relatively common meteorological phenomenon, with occurrences reported from many countries throughout history. The animals most likely to drop from the sky in a rainfall are fish and frogs, with birds coming third. Sometimes the animals survive the fall, especially fish, suggesting a small time gap between the extraction and the actual drop. Several witnesses of raining frogs describe the animals as startled, though healthy, and exhibiting relatively normal behavior shortly after the event. In some incidents, however, the animals are frozen to death or even completely enclosed in blocks of ice. These occurrences may be evidence for the transport of the victims to high altitudes, where the temperature is below zero, and they show how powerful meteorological forces can be. Most recent occurrences include the rain of frogs and toads in Serbia (2005) and London (1998), and rains of fish in India (2006) and Wales (2004).
