COVID-19 hospitalizations in the United States on Tuesday reached 61,964, a record high, according to data from the COVID Tracking Project.The Tuesday numbers surpass those from April 15, when 59,940 people across the country were hospitalized due to the novel coronavirus.

A record of nearly 700 people are in the hospital because the coronavirus and 1,800 additional cases were reported on Thursday, another record.

"It's obvious we're headed in the wrong direction," said Nebraska's Chief Medical Officer Dr. Gary Anthone.
Anthone said the state's hospitals cannot ride out the surge in COVID cases by just adding beds.
Bryan Medical Center officials in Lincoln said at midnight, they were just four beds away from staff capacity.
"That is the highest midnight census I've seen here in this organization," Bryan President and CEO John Woodrich said.
He said Bryan has already reduced the number of elective surgeries and are considering other measures including using pediatric rooms to cover the surge in patients.
"Getting beds isn't the only answer because you have to find the staff to staff those beds," Woodrich said.
Woodrich said the patients coming in are pretty sick.
More than half of the 50 deaths in Lancaster County have occurred since September.
"That is an indication that this thing is really pretty serious and people are more severely ill," Woodrich said.
One actionable step Gov. Ricketts took on Thursday was to have some agencies go back to having some staff work remotely and implement other measures to dedensify offices.
He urged businesses to consider doing the same thing.
"Wear masks avoid in-person meeting. Avoid gatherings in cafeterias," Ricketts said.
Ricketts reimposed some Directed Health Measures (DHM) in mid-October.
Those measures reduced the size of crowds for bars and restaurants and at large indoor gatherings.
Ricketts said if hospitalization numbers don't turn around soon, he may have to consider more.
"One of the ways people can avoid tightening the DHMs is if people follow the rules," Ricketts said.


Governor Pete Ricketts announced that starting Wednesday, Nebraska businesses and churches will be required to follow several new health measures. face coverings will be required in businesses where people are in close contact for more than 15 minutes, such as in a hair salon.
