If you're driving around in a big suburban w/ blacked out windows and big shiny 22's in an area that doesn't support
the income to buy that, you might be a drug dealer.

Cop got shot overnight with his service weapon by an otherwise "unarmed black teen". 911 call about a prowler at 4am....cop turns into street and black teen tales of running wearing a backpack and dark clothes...officer catches up to him and draws pistol...doesn't shoot probly because in his mind he thinks...Ill give him the benefit of doubt, backpack probly means he's on his way to library for extra study....teen then attacks him, turns pistol into him and first two shots to the chest and shoulder of the cop. Officer in hospital after surgery now, suspect still on loose.

It's a civil rights issue and everyone should be active in fighting for equal rights and equal treatment, regardless of the issue. Many men stood up in the early 20th century and fought for womens rights.

However, the torch has to be carried by black leaders.This has to be a movement for black people, by black people. I happen to be married to a woman that's half black and my kids have african american ethnicity, so it's an important issue to me.

But I can't be the main messenger

The difference is people's lives matter more to us when we can relate to them; the more we can relate, the more they matter. A by-product of evolving from our ancestors who lived in small tribes no doubt, allowing them to dedicate the optimal amounts of concern to those who were more likely to share their genes (ensuring their genes were more likely to flourish). These days consciousness and our ability to voluntarily choose who and what we surround ourselves with has drastically changed the process, but our brains tendency is still to deal with the world in the same way.

Is that relevant though? Even if you somehow don't believe that people should prioritize the world according to what and who matters most to them, is caring about different things than the majority a crime worthy of using force against? 'Cause when you say something like "Black lives matter', most people are going to interpret this as "black lives matter more than others, since those others aren't receiving the attention this message is'. If you want all lives to matter, then simply say that, and stop treating lives differently based on race

It wasn't until recently however that I gave this much thought, it was just in a slightly different light. I think this also translates to politics and who we vote for. I think people tend to vote for the candidate that they can relate to most, or want to relate to most.

I've got a very close friend that is a financial advisor. He's around rich white people all day. He though, isn't rich. He makes significantly less than I do, however his lifestyle closely mirrors that of his clients. He's also votes republican across the board. I don't have any problems with how he votes, I honestly could care less, Oklahoma will always give it's electoral votes to the R candidate but he's voting against his own best interest in order to vote for the person that he relates to more closely. Or possibly in his case, the person he wants to relate to more.

To your last paragraph, #blacklivesmatter is only symbolic. I don't think it implies that black lives matter more, I think we live in a society where black lives really do matter less and the slogan should say #blacklivesmatterto

Cheers kraky; I don't think anyone is born having everything figured out, most (including myself) figure it out as they go, learning and expanding their views...key is to seek out differing viewpoints and challenge your views as often as practical to make sure they hold up.

I'd almost always agree that voting (R) is against his interests, same as (D) is almost always a waste...not many in either party that have the right values. Country might be better off if people took voting more seriously and thought for themselves a bit more before voting.

Shrug, I know it's symbolic, and my sentiment that people matter is close in theory. The problem is a slogan calling out race is framing the problem in racial terms, which is the goal...but the problems can't be convincingly described as having race as a major cause. While the movement is trying to martyr criminals who fall in certain situations (black criminal shot by white cop) by claiming racism, the argument falls flat really quickly when no concern is shown for similar situations with different racial makeups, or when evidence comes out that the cop did nothing wrong and it doesn't change the movement's protests.

Gunshard, I completely agree. But that is a separate issue in and of itself, police conduct. It does overlap with blacklivesmatter because black people, particularly black men, are disproportioantely affected.

Check out this Philly officer. Caught on tape of extortion and, using a homophobic slur. Forcing a guy he pulled over to buy raffle tickets to a local charity that supports the families of fallen officers.

Not a good time to be an officer. Everyone is recording every thing and people of all color are tired of being victims to their bullshit shenanigans. DA's prosecuting more with harsher sentences. Every cop right now is under a microscope and rightfully so. For years, proponents of LEO's said that the officers involved in misconduct were just bad apples, and they're the exception and not the rule.

Then video after video after video after video after video came out exposing the culture problem with police departments and it became evident that they weren't isolated events, that indeed there is a problem.
