So with regards to the downtown area, the hotels and in the freemont experience lane, I personally think it is totally cool.

My only hesitation is that one time when my wife and i were there, we walked down the street ( the road to the strip) to pick up a taxi at night and we were cased/followed/accosted by a couple of less than savory types.

Luckily, we did not stop, kept walking and got in a taxi before anything happened. I am 99% sure we would have been mugged if we stopped and did not get a taxi shortly after they started talking to us.

Yea, Freemont Street looks pretty cool, especially the nighttime atmosphere. I'm surprised the area is so dangerous. Guess I won't be able to get too drunk.

It's a tourist area in a tourist city. I hope it's not going to scary but pretty much anyone I spoke to from the US warned about dangerous people last time I visited too, and I kind of think you guys are a bit super sensitive to an issue that isn't as bad as you imagine most of the time. I hope that turns out to be correct anyway

I am not worried about downtown, I just wanted to highlight the issue we ran into given the comments. The lesson I learned is that I would not go outside of the freemont experience (at night) without going through the hotel's taxi stand. and always keep your head up and aware.

I'll go check out downtown on Grand Theft Auto San Andreas.... last time I was there, in two-player mode, my son and I had a three-hour long shoot out from inside a parking garage that left at least sixty Swat Tanks and 100 helicopters blown to bits......, and over 700 officers dead.....

I think BeerDoggy made a good point about keeping your head on a swivel...just be street smart and aware of your surroundings and everything will be fine...

Also, I'm assuming we will be in a group of 2 or more most times and noone will mess with us...probably not the best idea to be cruising the streets of downtown alone late night..use common sense..

I was mostly asking about the Fremont area. I don't plan on walking around outside that area. I was just wondering if the ladies at work were exaggerating on how bad it is there. Im not worried about myself. He'll, I walk through Atlantic City's ghetto at night. Can't be much worse than that. I'm only concerned about my son and nephew who are both 17 and don't have a lot of street smarts. I was planning on letting them do their own thing when I'm out gambling etc. Hopefully they can be like Rusty Griswald and win a couple cars and throw the dice for a couple hours . What was his name Nick Papageorgio?

From the reviews I read Golden Nugget is full of families with teenagers. Was one of the reasons chose Plaza across the street. But might be good for your guys. Apparently there is a pretty impressive pool setup with a water slide that goes through a shark tank and some other stuff that attracts families.

spent many drunk nights at the Irish Pub. Good food at an affordable price. Probably the best eatery in AC if one does not have comps for free food. Whitehouse subs is another favorite.

Shark chute looks like fun. Apparently down for maintenance right now. Hopefully it's up and running in a few weeks.

Plaza sucks compared to the Golden Nugget or any other and more expensive too. Book Golden Nugget through their web site joining their email list to include their coupon book. Great shrimp cocktails in cafe next to sportsbook and awesome buffet across street. Live concerts always just outside. I have never thought of danger always giving heavily to some of the 50K homeless living there knowing many by name.

Probably depends on timing, but last time I stayed there was pretty even mix of families...it's why I usually prefer the 21+ pools, gets a lot crazier (pronounced: fun) without kids around. Their waterslide through the shark tank is nice, but if you blink you'll miss the sharks on the way down
