Date Set for Paid Parking MGM Properties Las Vegas
    June 6, 2016

Well, it's here, boys. Vegas continues to nickel and dime the tourists. First, resort fees, and now, charging for self parking. Here's the e-mail I received this morning:

MGM Resorts International is taking steps to implement a $90 million parking strategy to expand parking availability, implement technology upgrades and reduce the hassle and frustration resulting from outdated and inefficient facilities.

In order to fund these investments—and the ongoing maintenance and capital improvements of our parking facilities—we will be instituting fees for self- and valet parking. Fees will begin to roll out at our Las Vegas hotels on June 6, 2016. While these rates remain significantly below those of other highly popular tourism destinations, as a Pearl Member, you will continue to receive complimentary self-parking benefits.
As a Pearl M life Rewards Member:
Self-parking will continue to be complimentary.
Once you've achieved Gold tier status or above, you will receive complimentary valet parking.
All parking is subject to availability.
The environment in Las Vegas has changed dramatically in the decades since amenities like low-quality dining, lodging and free parking were offered to attract customers. Growth in tourism and our local population—including many more cars on our local roadways—requires more parking availability, more efficient, modern parking systems and more frequent maintenance and upgrades to our aging facilities—all of which come at significant cost.

We are committed to continuing to develop the Las Vegas guest experience and hope that you will recognize the improvements during your next trip to one of our Las Vegas resorts.

I was valeting my ride at booya's place and as I was dealing with the valet, a guy in a pink bunny costume appeared out of nowhere. He tried to hug the valet. It was fukkin' weird.

I know the thread has already turned, but just wanted to weigh in...

I didn't understand why they did it at first, but now I realized it's because of the T-Mobile Arena.

Parking for free in a casino is fine if you're going to gamble, but if you're likely not gonna (and just going to the event), you're just taking up real estate that a casino gambler/lodger/diner/clubber would be using. I get it. Don't you?

If you're the type of person it bothers, I probably would rather have somebody else parking at my billion-dollar casino instead of you.

Just business fellas, nothing personal. Look at it from both sides though.

I know there were specifics about this strategy like you are saying, but in general casinos seem to be relying more on non gambling revenue than in the past.

I'm sure other houses are watching closely and many will likely follow suit.

And I think it will. It's just psychology. Nobody who takes the time and money to come all the way out to Vegas are going to be turned off by a nominal parking fee. Locals will just Uber.

                                              It's free money.

I get that aspect of it. However, it's just another nickel and dime job by Vegas. I have the Pearl Status, so I can self park for free and it only took a few stays at an MGM property to obtain. And I obviously tip if I valet. Is $10-50 going to keep me from a Vegas weekend? No. I just feel as though you are getting less and less for your money in Vegas. Resort fees when the pool is closed and wifi is available to anyone who steps foot in the casino. So your $25-35 gets you access to the gym, which is standard in any other hotel.

I go into a sports book and wager up to $5K on an off summer day during bases season and the clerk tosses me 2 drink tickets. Customer service has fallen way off and the value of your cash has as well. To pay to self park in a lot with cig butts, puke, garbage, and having to worry about door dings when you are spending thousands of dollars in a property is ridiculous. They better clean up the lots and have security in them 24/7. If you want to make the lots for hotel guests or gamblers only for the new arena dilemna, fine. Issue placards or have a system where security is keeping tabs. I foresee this as being a new, lazy way to collect money without making improvements though.

Also, let's say you park at Monte Carlo or NY/NY and go to the hockey game, UFC fight, concert, etc. There's a high probability you are going to pop in to the casino to gamble or grab drinks before or after. The casino is getting its money one way or another. What next, cocktail waitresses monitoring the slow play slot players who are just sitting at the machine for a few free drinks?

In Vegas, it's monkey-see, monkey-do. So all the properties will be charging for this pretty soon.
