Not saying he will lose, but I would proceed with caution on this one in his next start.

#10186I think he ran well but was getting tired, and understandably so, the last 1/8th. Not sure he much left in the tank if he saw that closer or not. He will be more fit next out but at low odds, I would be skeptical of assuming he just wins next out. It was a good effort, but I saw nothing special about it with the position he had and the leader early just running off.

mentioned in batt's thread that I liked garamond at a price in this round of future bets .. he was training at payson park coming up to the gotham stakes at aqu ..if chad were to send him back to payson park with the intention of shipping back to run in the wood memorial do you feel that's an advantageous scenario vs just keeping him at aqueduct? think we may have discussed a ways back that it's a deeper surface and good for getting a horse very fit for a race..maybe a nicer environment also and have him in a better state of mind for the race ?
In today's world of shipping horses with such ease, Florida is the most likely choice Assuming all things are fine.Comment -

#10188I have not followed it very much this winter. I read the headlines but have not really looked hard at any big 3 yr. old Derby prep races yet so I just am not up to speed enough to have an opinion.
I respect your opinion on these so kind of futures. For me, I'm not sure I would know the true value of a stallion play at this point. Think I would be kind of lost.Comment -

#10189Several speeds in here to help set things up nicely. Cuts back off time from 1 mile races. The" if" is, can he close going 6F ? I don't know. At a short price I might just watch although the speeds don't do a lot for me.. I would think he might be more like 6-1 which makes him worth a look IMO.Comment -

It is a nice environment indeed JBEX. For me, the fact that he is based in Fla. now might have me send him back down for the next race. I have to think Chad is in Florida and if it was me, I would want to keep things exactly the same for the horse, that is, groom., exercise rider, stall, etc. I would want to see the horse daily or as often as possible and if Chad is down there, leaving him in NY has him away for that next race with everything different.
In today's world of shipping horses with such ease, Florida is the most likely choice Assuming all things are fine.
probably the most important reason of them all is what you mentioned with chad being down in florida along with it being a nice place to be ..also keep him with the same people who work with him regularly .. kind of feel (w/o knowing the field) it's not crazy that he could run a nice race in the wood memorial (if they go that path) and then you have a shot with him in the derby at mega odds

The thing with MSW races are that with firsters, I feel others ( the connections) probably know more than I do. So while I always look, I am fine with most races but not particular to MSW.

broke maiden in debut last race vs statebred msw..gritty nose win pretty much battling through most of the stretch ..next logical step but think the fact he did it in the mud and figure a little light is reason for the high ml

With the special weight horses, they can be well bred but not that great or a horse that is way above their logical ability. As a handicapper, we have to guess while others already know. Hope I am saying it right so that makes sense.

Needachant breaks with him and steps all over Pleasant Colony’s tendon and he had to retire from racing . Breeders Cup Classic prep I think. He was retired to stud . We tried to warn Campo’s help but they were so arrogant they obviously didn’t listen.
I was just a punk from Md. in their eyes. Didn’t work out so well for them.
Full story definitely in here somewhere.

At least with maiden claimers you can see a true value of the horse. The claim worries keep it somewhat honest as to placement.

A 3 year old vs. olders.
yeah, maybe the figure pushes the odds up but the old saying “time only counts in jail “ comes to mind. Lol.Comment -

I’ll never forget it. Campo claimed my horse Needachant at the Meadowlands and I told the story in here. He was a nut in the gate and Campo needed a horse to work with Pleasant Colony to prep for a huge grade 1.

The entire story is in these pages from years ago but I have not figured out how to key word search in this new format. Only one seems to come up in the search and it is today's. I know I have posted the entire story in here at least once, probably posted a picture of Needachant as well. I bought him as a late yearling for 1k out of a field in Md. He was a piece of work Lol.
from memory pleasant colony was a solid sire for a long time ..if he had come back as a 4yo and had a solid season could have enhanced his value as a stallion significantlyComment -

you had the right idea here..be interesting to see if they can get him to close in his next few starts ..also possible he just needed that race off the lengthy layoff and can get it done on the front end when in shape

#10208Louisiana Derby Draw
The field for next Saturday’s Louisiana Derby has been drawn, and Caldera was assigned post #5 in a field of 10. He has been quoted as the 5-1 third choice on the morning line. That’s a fine post for him and at first glance this definitely looks like a race he should have a legitimate shot in.

#10209Straight No Chaser Workout Report
Straight No Chaser breezed a half mile in :48.40 on Sunday morning over the Meydan dirt course. He worked by himself as usual, breezing in even fractions and finishing up in hand. Trainer Dan Blacker, who was on site for the breeze, clocked him galloping out in 1:00.20. “He looked like his usual self out there. Juan said he felt good,” reported Blacker.
The plan remains for Straight No Chaser to have two additional works leading up to the G1 Dubai Golden Shaheen on Apr. 5th.

13-1 on him is ridiculous. All this one does is run his heart out for you.
The horse learned quite a bit in that race from the experience point of view.
Expect more of the same next start.
What a nice horse to have in your barn to work with.
He got a lot out of that race mentally AND physically.
I just shake my head when I see this stuff. And for all the good reasons.Comment -
