    Oct.17 Thursday recap summary

    Highlights from Thursday night's games:

    New Jersey Devils

Jack Hughes got his first NHL point, and the New Jersey Devils ended a six-game losing streak to begin the season with a 5-2 win against the New York Rangers at Prudential Center on Thursday.

Hughes, the center selected No. 1 in the 2019 NHL Draft, had the primary assist on the deciding goal by Miles Wood that gave the Devils a 3-1 lead at 12:25 of the second period. Hughes was in the slot when he deflected a shot by Matt Tennyson that went in off Wood.

"It's a big win for us; we needed that to get our confidence back," Hughes said.

    New York Islanders

Mathew Barzal scored two goals for the New York Islanders in a 3-1 win against the Winnipeg Jets at Bell MTS Place on Thursday.

"He's shooting the puck way better," Islanders coach Barry Trotz said. "We talked about it last year, sort of being a dual-threat and not always a pass-first guy. He changed a lot of things this summer, and that was one of them. He scored two big, huge goals for us."

Barzal has three goals and two assists during a three-game winning streak for New York (4-3-0).

    Arizona Coyotes

Phil Kessel scored his first two goals for the Arizona Coyotes in a 5-2 win against the Nashville Predators at Gila River Arena on Thursday.

Jakob Chychrun scored his first of the season, and Nick Schmaltz, Clayton Keller and Derek Stepan each had two assists for Arizona (3-2-1), which went 3-for-6 on the power play. Darcy Kuemper made 23 saves in his Coyotes record 12th consecutive start allowing two goals or fewer.

"We could have won them all so far. We're playing well," said Kessel, who was traded to Arizona by the Pittsburgh Penguins on June 29. "If we keep building, we're going to be a real tough team. Guys are confident. Guys are working for each other and playing hard."

    Buffalo Sabres

Carter Hutton set the Buffalo Sabres record for most saves in a shutout with 47 in a 3-0 win against the Los Angeles Kings at Staples Center on Thursday.

It was Hutton's second consecutive shutout after he made 25 saves in a 4-0 win against the Dallas Stars on Monday.

"He stole us that game, so we'll take two points, for sure, pretty much thanks to [Hutton]," said forward Casey Mittelstadt, who had two goals and an assist.

Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice gets 700th win

Winnipeg Jets coach Paul Maurice got his 700th NHL win when Connor Hellebuyck made 28 saves in the Winnipeg Jets' 1-0 shootout victory against the Edmonton Oilers at Bell MTS Place on Sunday.

Maurice is the seventh NHL coach to win 700 games.

It was Hellebuyck's first shutout of the season and the 15th of his NHL career, all with Winnipeg (5-5-0), which ended a three-game losing streak.

Mike Smith was also credited with a shutout; he made 23 saves for Edmonton (7-1-1). It was his first shutout of the season.

Kyle Connor and Patrik Laine scored in the first two rounds of the shootout for the Jets; Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Connor McDavid each failed to convert for the Oilers.

Carl Dahlstrom had a goal disallowed at 8:27 of the third period after Edmonton won a coach's challenge for offsides.

Leon Draisaitl's season-opening eight game point streak (six goals, 10 assists) ended.

I have a picks thread in the Hockey subforum, just like the previous 2 years. There are a handful of serious handicappers in the subforums that you will never see in Players Talk.

Hope that helps. That's why I don't post my actual picks in this thread.

                  Injury news and notes

Minnesota Wild goalie Devan Dubnyk will miss Thursday's game against the Nashville Predators due to an upper-body injury he suffered Tuesday night, the team announced Wednesday.

Dubnyk is considered day-to-day, the club said.

Dubnyk left Tuesday night's 3-0 win against Edmonton after being injured early in the second period.

Dubnyk was upended after Minnesota's Ryan Donato fell to the ice while battling the Oilers' Brandon Manning. Dubnyk tried to leap over both sliding players, but fell hard on his backside and appeared to hit the back of his head on the ice.

Colorado Avalanche star Mikko Rantanen is "week-to-week" after suffering a lower-body injury during an awkward moment against the St. Louis Blues on Monday.

The injury wasn't caused by an opponent, but rather by an opponent's ice. Early in the second period, Rantanen's left skate got caught in the ice, causing his left foot to twist unnaturally. He fell to the ice in pain, and limped off to the dressing room for treatment.

The Boston Bruins have placed forward David Krejci on injured reserve with an upper-body injury.

Krejci has missed two games since he was injured in the first period of a 4-2 win over Anaheim on Oct. 14. He has one assist this season.

Bruins general manager Don Sweeney said the team has recalled forward Anders Bjork from Providence on an emergency basis.

Mats Zuccarello returns to American Airlines Center for his first game with the Minnesota Wild against the Dallas Stars on Tuesday Oct.29

The forward has one assist in seven games, and missed four games because of a lower-body injury, after agreeing to a five-year, $30 million contract with Minnesota on July 1. He had 40 points (12 goals, 28 assists) in 48 games with the Stars and Rangers last season. He had 11 points (four goals, seven assists) in 13 Stanley Cup Playoff games with the Stars.

Patrik Laine will miss his second straight game because of a lower-body injury when the Winnipeg Jets visit the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Friday.

The forward did not play for the Jets, who are 2-5-0 in their past seven games, in a 7-4 loss to the Anaheim Ducks on Wednesday.

The Sharks, who have lost three straight games, begin a six-game homestand and play 11 of their next 14 games on home ice following a 1-3-1 road trip when they were outscored 14-4. Goalie Martin Jones will start.

Jets forward Nikolaj Ehlers has three goals and two assists in his last three games.

Sharks defenseman Brent Burns has one goal and four assists in a four-game point streak.

Winnipeg Jets defender Dustin Byfuglien's NHL future is still up in the air, and an injury may further complicate things. As per NBCSN (via TSN's Bob McKenzie), Byfuglien underwent ankle surgery to resolve a high-ankle sprain that had been bothersome since the end of last season.
The recovery timetable will keep the 14-year veteran sidelined at least through the remainder of the calendar year. TSN's Darren Dreger reported Thursday that Byfuglien's recovery has a "loose timeline," but that it could be longer than four months.

                                                        Dallas defenseman John Klingberg injury

Dallas defenseman John Klingberg is out at least 2 weeks for the Dallas Stars with a lower-body injury, coach Jim Montgomery said after a 4-1 home win against the Colorado Avalanche on Tuesday Nov.5

The was hit in the neck area with a shot in the second period before twisting and falling to the ice. He was helped off by a trainer and returned to finish the period but did not come out for the third.

Dallas is also missing defensemen Andrej Sekera (general soreness), Roman Polak (sternum) and Stephen Johns (post-traumatic headaches).

Fortunately for the Stars (8-8-1 overall record), they don't play again until Sunday when they begin a 4-game Canada road trip beginning against Winnipeg Jets.

Dallas has won 4 in a row, and 7 of 8, following after a 1-7-1 start to the season.

This injury is notable because Klingberg is perhaps the key defenseman for Dallas. The team struggled last year when he was on the injured list.
