His hit streak finally ended at 18 games but the Blue Jays still won their 7th straight game.

The Jays are hot. I figured it was only a matter of time before they got their engines running...

TORONTO (AP) A power surge and an unexpected pitching gem lifted the streaking Toronto Blue Jays their eighth straight win.
Justin Smoak hit one of four Blue Jays homers, Scott Copeland won in his first major league start and Toronto beat the Miami Marlins 7-2 Wednesday to extend its winning streak to eight.
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons called Copeland's performance ''unbelievable.''
''I don't see how you can do it better than that,'' Gibbons said. ''He definitely opened up everybody's eyes.''
Copeland (1-0), a 27-year-old right-hander who made his big league debut in relief on May 2, started in place of Aaron Sanchez, who was skipped because of general soreness. Copeland allowed one run and six hits in seven innings, struck out four and walked none.
''All the hard work finally paid off,'' Copeland said. ''Hopefully I can stay up here and keep it going.''
Still, Toronto optioned Copeland back to Triple-A Buffalo after game.
Josh Donaldson, Russell Martin and Jose Reyes also homered for the Blue Jays (31-30), who moved above .500 for the first time since May 19 (16-15). Toronto is on its longest winning run since a nine-game streak from May 20-28 last year.
''They're as good a hitting club as we've faced,'' Marlins manager Dan Jennings said.
Smoak and Martin hit consecutive homers in the fourth off Tom Koehler (4-4), who allowed six runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings and lost for the first time since May 6 at Washington.
''I didn't keep it in the ballpark today,'' Koehler said. ''It's tough to win a game when you give up three homers, no matter who you're facing.''
Reyes and Donaldson hit back-to-back drives in the seventh off Koehler and Sam Dyson. The Blue Jays have hit consecutive homers three times this season.
Toronto has outscored opponents 57-21 during its current streak.

This injury kind of came out of nowhere.

Yankees placed LHP Andrew Miller on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left forearm.

Miller has a 1.03 ERA, 0.68 WHIP and 17 saves on the year, so it's obviously a huge loss for the Yanks. Dellin Betances will take over as closer in Miller's absence. There's no timetable for his return, as the extent of the injury is still unclear.

Giovanny Urshela got his first major league hit in the third inning. He added his first big league home run in the sixth.
Unfortunately, his family did not get to see either milestone.
''They left in the second inning,'' he said.
The 23-year-old Colombian third baseman made his major league debut Tuesday, and his family stayed in town for three days. But his family had to start heading home and couldn't stay at Progressive Field for the entirety of the Cleveland Indians' 6-0 win over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday.
''It's very exciting, both hits,'' Urshela said. ''I was just trying to get one in one day, and I got two.''
Urshela, who backed a two-hitter by Shaun Marcum and a pair of relievers, was called up from Triple-A Columbus when Lonnie Chisenhall was sent down Sunday.
Urshela grounded an RBI single past shortstop Brad Miller in a four-run third, the first batter after Tom Wilhelmsen relieved J.A. Happ (3-2). His home run off Vidal Nuno just cleared the 19-foot fence in left and rebounded onto the field.

We were laughing about the same thing the other day.

How about the only 3 base runners were hit-by-pitch.

Yeah, Drabek would have been the guess of many people.

I was actually thinking Dock Ellis, but he started the 1971 Summer Classic if memory serves correct.

I always thought of Jerry Reuss as a Dodger, not a Pirate...

Blue Jays are on fire !!!
BOSTON (AP) The highest scoring team in baseball put up its highest scoring inning of the season.
The Toronto Blue Jays scored nine runs in the seventh - all before making an out - and beat the Boston Red Sox 13-10 by overcoming an 8-1 deficit Friday night for their ninth straight win.
''Incredible,'' Toronto manager John Gibbons said of the outburst.
''Relentless'' is how Russell Martin described the offense after his bases-loaded triple snapped an 8-8 tie.
''Long'' was Boston manager John Farrell's analysis of his team's worst inning in a year in which it is in last place in the AL East and a season-worst eight games under .500 (27-35).
Justin Smoak drove in three runs, two scoring on his homer that made it 13-8 on the first pitch after Martin's triple.
''It was awesome,'' Smoak said. ''It can happen any time with this lineup.''
Trailing 13-9, the Red Sox had a chance to tie it in the eighth when they loaded the bases after Xander Bogaerts singled in a run. But with two outs, Mike Napoli took a called third strike.
''My mindset was to go up there and do some damage,'' Napoli said. ''It's a tough one to swallow.''
Brett Cecil gave up an RBI double in the ninth to Rusney Castillo but got his third save.
Steve Delabar (2-0) pitched a perfect sixth. Junichi Tazawa (0-2) took the loss.
Boston took a 5-0 lead in the first against Drew Hutchison when Pablo Sandoval, a two-run shot, and Mookie Betts hit back-to-back homers and David Ortiz had a two-run single. Smoak's RBI-triple made it 5-1 in the second before Dustin Pedroia's three-run homer put Boston on top 8-1 in the fifth.
Toronto scored three runs in the fifth off Joe Kelly, who left after the sixth with an 8-4 lead.
Then came the seventh when Toronto's first nine batters reached base - three against Matt Barnes, five against Tazawa and one against Tommy Layne - with all of them scoring.
''We have a ton of power and when we have that there's always a chance to come back,'' Gibbons said. ''I don't put anything past these guys.''
Toronto entered the night with 325 runs, 50 more than the New York Yankees, who had the second-most in the majors.
Kevin Pillar led off the seventh with a single and scored on a double by Ryan Goins. Jose Reyes then singled in a run, Josh Donaldson singled and Jose Bautista followed with another RBI single.
Edwin Encarnacion then singled, loading the bases, and Toronto tied it at 8 on an error by third baseman Sandoval, who dived to catch Chris Colabello's hard shot down the line then dropped the ball.
Martin cleared the bases with his triple over the head of center fielder Castillo, chasing Tazawa. But Smoak drove the first pitch from Layne into the seats in left for his fifth homer and a 13-8 lead. Layne then settled down, retiring the next three batters.
Red Sox relievers retired the last nine Blue Jays.

Great comeback by the Blue Jays last night for sure EmpireMaker. Not sure if they can keep winning like this but I'm enjoying the ride so far. 60 more runs scored than any other team in MLB, let's not speak about the runs allowed though.

                                                  Verlander returns vs. toughest foe

Welcome to the 2015 season, Justin Verlander. Time to pitch against your worst team: He's lost to the Indians more than any other team in his career (18-16 in 40 starts). His ERA of 4.42 against them is his worst vs. any opponent (minimum 3 starts).
