I'm backing Finland to win its men's Olympic hockey opener by at least two goals in my Slovakia vs. Finland prediction.

Group B play at the 2026 Winter Olympics opens with a fascinating clash of styles between a youth-led Slovakian squad and a veteran-heavy Finnish juggernaut. My Slovakia vs. Finland prediction examines how those factors will play out as Finland looks to start its gold medal defense on the right foot.

The Fins have a roster loaded with NHL stars - a luxury it didn't have in 2022 - and boast a massive gap in experience between the pipes. While Slovakia boasts rising stars like Juraj Slafkovsky, the lack of a proven NHL netminder makes them vulnerable against a Finnish offense led by Mikko Rantanen. Finland is a -410 moneyline betting favorite ahead of puck drop at 10:40 a.m. ET (USA Network), but we'll find value elsewhere.

Our expert Olympic hockey picks are based on the latest betting odds at the best sports betting sites.

Bet type Bet Best odds Confidence Unit size

💰 Slovakia vs. Finland best bet: Finland -2 (-118)

I'm backing the Finns to win the bronze medal, and I outlined the reasons why in my men's Olympic hockey predictions. While Slovakia has a decent roster, I'm concerned about their three goaltenders, none of whom have NHL experience.

Adam Gajan plays for the University of Minnesota Duluth in the NCAA, Samuel Hlavaj with Iowa in the AHL, and Stanislav Skorvanek with Mountfield in Czechia.

Finland's elite offensive players should show their superiority. I'm looking at their top five skaters, whom I featured in one reason each dark horse can win gold, to dominate.

Score prediction: Finland 4, Slovakia 1

🏒 Even without the superstars

These two squads met in 2022 sans NHL superstars, and Finland recorded a 6-2 victory in group play and a 2-0 victory in the semifinals. The gap has only widened with the Fins loading up on NHL superstars.

🔥 Best Slovakia vs. Finland prop bet: Mikko Rantanen Over 1.5 points

Mikko Rantanen has 20 multi-point games in 54 NHL outings this season. While Slovakia has three NHL defensemen, Rantanen and Dallas Stars teammate Roope Hintz and former Stars teammate Mikael Granlund form a formidable first line.

Not only are they top-tier players, but they also have chemistry and cohesion that will challenge the tournament's best defenses. In addition, Slovakia doesn't have an elite goaltender to bail them out when the aforementioned trio get chances. That's a frightening combination, and it's why I'm putting a full unit on it.

💡 How many Finland players are NHLers?

All but one of Finland's 25 players, Mikko Lehtonen of Zurich, play in the NHL. The Stars have four players on Team Finland, including Rantanen, Hintz, Miro Heiskanen, and Esa Lindell.

🇸🇰 How many Slovakia players are NHLers?

Slovakia has seven NHLers, including:

Player  Team  Position
Dalibor Dvorsky Blues Forward
Martin Pospisil Flames Forward
Pavol Regenda Sharks  Forward
Juraj Slafkovsky Canadiens  Forward
Erik Cernak Lightning  Defense
Martin Fehervary Capitals Defense
Simon Nemec Devils  Defense

🤔 How I'm capping Slovakia vs. Finland

With no previous games to go on, I'm keying on a few areas:

  • Finland's Dallas connection should offer an advantage
  • Slovakia's absence of a top goaltender should be seen as a disadvantage
  • Finland has several players who are among the NHL's best, while Slovakia lacks a superstar
