⚜️ New Orleans Saints 2025 season update

As of Saturday, Aug. 23, following the Saints' 28-19 loss to the Denver Broncos in the preseason finale, Coach Kellen Moore had yet announced who would be the starting quarterback for the team in Week 1. Both Spencer Rattler and second-round draft pick Tyler Shough had decent stats in the preseason, but neither seemed to take charge with their opportunities.
The Saints made two trades in their final week of preseason. First they dealt defensive tackle Khalen Saunders to the Jacksonville Jaguars for backup center Luke Fortner. Then later in the week, they gave up fourth-round and seventh-round picks in the 2026 draft to the Denver Broncos for wide receiver Devaughn Vele.
Running back Alvin Kamara played one down in all of preseason - the first play against the Broncos on Aug. 23 - but he held out only for precautionary measures, not injuries. Kamara turned 30 years old on July 25.
The line for the regular-season opener vs. Arizona in the Superdome came out in May at Cardinals -3.5. By Aug. 23, it had risen all the way to Cardinals -6. If it remains there, it would be the first time the Saints open a season as an underdog since 2021, when they opened the season playing a neutral-site game against Green Bay (but won, 38-3). It would be the first time they would be a dog that big in 20 years - in September 2005 - at Carolina (also won, 23-20).
