Top Against The Spread Predictions
Bills -7.5 (-105)
A few weeks ago, this game looked like it might decide who finishes atop the AFC East. Now, Miami is simply trying to hold onto a wild-card spot after falling to 8-5 with back-to-back losses out west to the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Chargers.
The Dolphins were held to 17 points in each of those two games and top receiver Tyreek Hill is dealing with an ankle injury that could hinder his performance this week.
The schedule-makers aren’t doing Miami any favors here, either, forcing the Dolphins to play a third straight road game on a short week - not to mention a night game in Buffalo in December. The warm-weather Dolphins have not fared well in late-season trips to upstate New York over the years, dropping nine of their last 10 visits to Highmark Stadium.
Buffalo’s offense struggled to move the ball last week against a tough Jets defense, gaining just 232 yards of total offense in a 20-12 win over New York. But that should only motivate Josh Allen and the Bills to bounce back with a stronger effort against a Dolphins team they generated nearly 500 yards of offense against when these teams met in September.
Nineteen of Buffalo’s last 22 victories have come by eight points or more, and this one should, as well.
Jets pick’em (-110)
Detroit is the darling of many NFL bettors these days, covering the spread for a sixth straight time in last week’s impressive 34-23 victory over the Minnesota Vikings. Quarterback Jared Goff has thrown for 670 yards combined in the Lions’ last two games, and Detroit is back in the NFC playoff mix with a 6-7 record, nipping at the heels of the 7-5-1 Washington Commanders and New York Giants for a wild-card berth.
Meanwhile, the Jets are headed in the other direction, losing two straight and four of their last six to drop to 7-6 and out of playoff position in the AFC. Quarterback Mike White was taken to hospital following last week’s 20-12 loss at Buffalo, and his status for Sunday’s contest is uncertain.
So, why back the Jets? Defense. New York’s defense is third in the NFL in yards allowed, fourth against the pass, and sixth in points allowed, while Detroit’s defense ranks 31st, 30th, and 31st, respectively. The Lions’ offense also hasn’t been nearly as prolific on the road, where Goff has thrown two touchdown passes and five interceptions this season.
Rams +7 (-110)
The Rams have been surprisingly scrappy since Matthew Stafford and Cooper Kupp went down to injury, rallying for a 17-16 victory over the Raiders last week to cover their third straight outing. Baker Mayfield was the hero in the victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, leading L.A. on two late touchdown drives just days after joining the team after being waived by the Carolina Panthers, and he’s already been named the Rams’ starting QB for the rest of the season.
Green Bay is still technically alive in the playoff race at 5-8, and the Packers are coming off a much-needed bye week that bought Aaron Rodgers some time to rest his fractured thumb. However, we’re not sure the Packers should be laying a touchdown against anybody right now. Outside of two victories over the woeful Chicago Bears, Green Bay hasn’t defeated a team by more than three points this season, needing overtime in two of those wins.
Los Angeles' defense could be bolstered this week with the potential return of Aaron Donald from an ankle injury. And though backing a dome team in a late-season night game outdoors can be a dicey proposition, Mayfield has plenty of experience playing in cold weather from his time with Cleveland. Expect the Rams to keep this a one-score game and be live for the outright upset.
