The first game of the 2026 NCAA Tournament kicks off with this First Four matchup at UD Arena in Dayton, Ohio, between two No. 16 seeds, UMBC and Howard, who have combined to win 20 straight games. Tipoff is set for 6:40 p.m. ET (truTV), with UMBC as the 2.5-point betting favorite.

My UMBC vs. Howard prediction expects the Retrievers' elite trio of guards to lead them to a Thursday matchup against Michigan. But it is UMBC's newfound rim protection that is the basis of my top player prop wager.

💰 UMBC vs. Howard prediction & best bet

UMBC-2.5 (-110)

The Retrievers are red-hot having won 12 straight, including their first two conference tournament games by a combined 37 points when teams were most familiar with them. Overall, they’re winning by an average of 16.8 points over the 12-game streak while playing to the equivalent of the country’s 86th-best team

Teams with a guard play advantage are usually successful in March, and UMBC’s trio of rim-attacking guards that average in double figures should break down the Bison zone press.

UMBC ranks in the 94th percentile for two-point attempts in the paint, and in the 96th percentile for efficiency.

Score prediction: UMBC 72 - Howard 67

🔥 Best UMBC vs. Howard player prop bet

Cedric Taylor Under 16.5 points (+102)

Ever since UMBC inserted 6-foot-10 Spaniard Jose Roberto Tanchyn into the starting lineup, the team has taken off, as it is 10.5 adjusted points per possession better with him on the floor.

Teams are unwilling to attack the rim on UMBC as much with him patrolling the middle. The Retrievers allowed a 32.3% rim rate through the first 21 games, but just 22.8% over the last 11 (which ranks in the 98th percentile).

Cedric Taylor ranked in the top 10 in effective field goal percentage and percentage of his team’s shots taken in MEAC play. A good amount of his success came on the offensive glass, where his 5.4% offensive rebounding rate ranked 20th in the conference. But Tanchyn ranks 27th nationally in defensive rebounding percentage, and I expect him to help keep Taylor under this projected total for the third straight game.

🚀 UMBC vs. Howard same-game parlay

With bet365 offering plus-money odds on the Under on Cedric Taylor's point total, it became my choice of the best sports betting apps for this same-game parlay, even if we're getting a half-point worse on the full game O/U than the high end of the market.

💡 How I'm betting UMBC vs. Howard

Follow all of our college basketball analysis and expert predictions this season.

While KenPom projects a 71-70 Howard win in this matchup, I am undeterred in my one-unit backing of the favored Retrievers on the point spread. The Unders of 141.5 and 16.5 for the game total and Taylor's points play nicely together as separate one-unit wagers as well.

I would not put anyone off backing UMBC's DJ Armstrong's player props after a heroic 33-point performance in the America East title game. While his O/U for points is 10.5, bet365 is offering +235 odds for him to score 15-plus if you think he is on the verge of a heater.

📊 Live UMBC vs. Howard odds: First Four

Either it's the result of a sharp line, or limited early beating interest, but the point spread has not wavered off the opening number of UMBC -2.5 since the matchup was revealed on Sunday night.

The O/U saw a slight dip from 141.5 to 141 at bet365, which ignores the trend that seven of UMBC's final eight games against MEAC opponents had at least 152 combined points.
