Several aces around Major League Baseball toe the rubber today, including Texas Rangers righty Jacob deGrom. While his outing makes for a strong case for one of our best NRFI bets today, not all games with aces on the bump share that same rationale.

My only YRFI (Yes Run First Inning, meaning at least one of the two teams will score before the second inning begins) play of the day comes from a game with a former Cy Young Award winner trying to rebound from two rocky starts in a row.

💰 Best NRFI bet today

Mets vs. Mariners (9:40 ET)

  • Austin Warren (1.40 ERA) vs. Emerson Hancock (2.78 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Mets (30-29) vs. Mariners (26-34)

We’re getting great value on this NRFI play, as the Mets will employ a bullpen game with Austin Warren acting as opener, when the original plan was to give Sean Manaea his first start after 12 relief appearances. Warren has allowed just one home run in 19 1/3 innings, which is important when facing the home run-happy Mariners. Seattle scored 12 of its 15 runs in the weekend sweep of the Diamondbacks via home runs.

On the other side, Emerson Hancock and his 1.64 first inning ERA should match zeros early.

📡 SBR Edge: Hancock dealing early

Hancock has allowed two runs in the first inning over 11 starts, and his .154 BABIP in that frame is his second-best of any inning this year, trailing only his .125 BABIP in the fourth inning.

🔥 More NRFI picks today

Marlins vs. Nationals (6:45 ET)

  • Sandy Alcantara (4.66 ERA) vs. Cade Cavalli (3.62)
  • YRFI records: Marlins (32-28) vs. Nationals (29-31)

Marlins righty Sandy Alcantara was on fire early, going seven-plus innings in each of his first three starts en route to career bests in xBA, hard-hit percentage, and swinging strike percentage over that span. But he pitched to a 5.76 ERA and 4.53 FIP over his next eight outings leading up to his last start. Though he threw a scoreless first inning in his last start, he also allowed eight earned runs and three homers against the Blue Jays.

In addition, Connor Norby (2-for-2) and Otto Lopez (3-for-4) have had great success in a small sample size against Cade Cavalli. With them hitting at the top of the lineup, that bodes well for chances of a run scoring early.

Royals vs. Reds (7:10 ET)

  • Luinder Avila (5.06 ERA) vs. Chase Burns (1.96 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Royals (32-27) vs. Reds (29-29)

Cincinnati Reds flamethrower Chase Burns has pitched to a 1.27 ERA and .171 opponents’ average in his last seven starts. While an innings limit may loom for the youngster in the second half of the season, that does not affect him in the present.

I’m encouraged that this will be the first time that all projected Royals starters will face Burns for the first time, especially since opponents the first time through the order are slashing .144/.222/.189 against him. Conversely, Luinder Avila has struggled with a 5.1 BB/9 rate this season, but he has much better control on the road while pitching to a 1.93 ERA in 9 1/3 road innings.

💣️ Prefer home runs?

If you prefer runs to no runs, I have a four-pack of taters for you. My best home run predictions today have you covered with some players I like to go yard.

Rangers vs. Cardinals (7:45 ET)

  • Jacob deGrom (3.77 ERA) vs. Michael McGreevy (2.98 ERA)
  • NRFI records: Rangers (19-40) vs. Cardinals (31-25)

Jacob deGrom has allowed 12 earned runs over his last 15 innings spanning three starts. But all of those came against AL West rivals well familiar with his arsenal, and he gets a reprieve facing the St. Louis Cardinals.

deGrom has generated 65 chases this season, tied for the second-most among all pitchers. We’re getting great odds for this wager as his 8.18 first inning ERA is his worst among any of the first six innings of games. But I expect him to overcome that and match zeroes with Michael McGreevy, whose 1.4 WAR through 11 starts accounts for nearly half of his career total.

🚀 Best NRFI parlay today

With only nine games on Monday's MLB slate, it didn't seem feasible to back four NRFI plays across nearly half of the days' games. Therefore, I am following the trend of Alcantara's decline with a YRFI play in this NL East battle, but am siding with the unfamiliarity between opponents with NRFI wagers in three other interleague games.

💡 How I'm betting NRFI picks today (June 1)

Follow all of our MLB analysis and expert predictions for baseball season.

With my four MLB NRFI/YRFI plays, I am striking a balance between positive trends like Chase Burns' and Emerson Hancock's elite first inning ERAs, while expecting positive regression from other starting pitchers who have struggled in the first inning, like deGrom. Backing an NRFI play in deGrom's start also bucks the trend of Texas being the most profitable YRFI team in the league.

❓ NRFI betting FAQ

What does NRFI mean in baseball betting?

NRFI stands for "No Run First Inning." It's a popular MLB bet that neither team will score in the first inning of a game, and the bet settles after just six outs (three per half-inning).

What does YRFI mean?

YRFI stands for "Yes Run First Inning" - the opposite of an NRFI. This MLB prop bet cashes if there's at least one run by either team in the first inning.

What should I look for when betting NRFIs?

Each team's starting pitcher is the biggest factor in cashing a NRFI bet, but you should also focus on each team's NRFI records (home vs. away) and each lineup's first-inning tendencies. Recent form can also play a bigger role than full-season numbers.
