Canadian Nick Taylor will attempt to defend his title on home soil, this week at Hamilton Golf and Country Club, but Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy is again the man to beat according to the RBC Canadian Open odds from our best golf betting sites.

The RBC Canadian Open returns to Hamilton Golf and Country Club for the seventh time and first time since Rory McIlroy's seven-stroke victory over Shane Lowry, Webb Simpson, and the rest of the field in 2019. As such, McIlroy - the No. 3 golfer in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) - is a heavy betting favorite by the consensus 2024 Canadian Open odds.

Nick Taylor became the first Canadian to win this tournament in 69 years with his victory at Oakdale Golf and Country Club last June (8-11). His odds remain inflated a year later, even after winning the 2024 WM Phoenix Open in February and entering this week at No. 30 in the world rankings.

Keep an eye on the U.S. Open odds when betting this week's event. The third major of 2024 is just two weeks away, and many of this week's favorites are also expected to be serious contenders at Pinehurst No. 2 in mid-June.

To help with your Canadian Open picks, here are the early Canadian Open odds from our best sports betting sites.

Canadian Open favorite

Rory McIlroy

McIlroy slipped to No. 3 in the OWGR as he was leapfrogged by Xander Schauffele following the latter's win in the PGA Championship two weeks ago. Neither participated in last week's Charles Schwab Challenge, and only McIlroy is in attendance in Hamilton this week.

McIlroy lapped the field with a seven-stroke victory for his first Canadian Open title at Hamilton Golf and Country Club in 2019. After the 2020 and 2021 tournaments were canceled amid COVID-19, he won his second straight title north of the border - by two strokes over Tony Finau - at St. George's Golf and Country Club in 2022. He'll now look to join an exclusive club of four golfers to win this tournament three or more times.

Though McIroy had a lackluster T-12 finish in the PGA Championship as one of the betting favorites for the second major of 2024, he was coming off his fourth career victory in the Wells Fargo Championship.

He's a fine candidate to back at another familiar and friendly venue, but there isn't much value in these suppressed odds. A winning $10 bet would return a profit of just $40 at BetMGM, with the +400 odds representing an implied win probability of 20.00%.

How to bet on golf

When it comes to golf betting, it's essential to understand the various types of wagers available and how to assess player performance effectively. Begin by acquainting yourself with the common bet types, such as outright winners, each-way bets (which encompass both a win and a top finish), head-to-head matchups, and proposition bets tailored to specific tournament events, like hole-in-one occurrences or player performances on designated holes.

Once you've determined your preferred bet types, conduct thorough research on players, course conditions, recent form, and other pertinent factors that could influence outcomes. Delve into player statistics, recent tournament performances, course history, and any injuries or changes in form that may impact a player's chances of success. Armed with this information, you can make well-informed betting decisions and increase your likelihood of success in the realm of golf betting.
