Rory McIlroy makes his season debut on the PGA Tour, looking to defend his title in Pebble Beach, Calif., but Scottie Scheffler remains the heavy outright betting favorite by the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am odds. The tournament runs from Thursday through Sunday and will be broadcast on Golf Channel and CBS.

There's an 80-man field in attendance for the first Signature Event of the PGA Tour season. I looked at the significance of the upcoming PGA Tour schedule in my early Masters picks.

  • Scottie Scheffler: +270 to win | -158 top 5 | -330 top 10
  • Rory McIlroy: +1350 to win | +270 top 5 | +130 top 10
  • Tommy Fleetwood: +2400 to win | +410 top 5 | +188 top 10
  • Si Woo Kim: +2450 to win | +420 top 5 | +194 top 10
  • Xander Schauffele: +2500 to win | +445 top 5 | +205 top 10

🆚 AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am favorites: Scottie or Rory?

McIlroy played two events on the DP World Tour before rejoining the PGA Tour for the year's first Signature Event. He tied for third in the Dubai Invitational and then finished T-33 in the Hero Dubai Desert Classic.

Scheffler has played two events, with a win in The American Express and a T-3 in last week's WM Phoenix Open.

Those schedules (and results) aren't enough for me to back Scheffler at the substantially shorter +270 odds to win. While I may consider Scheffler in a 72-hole tournament matchup, I'm taking McIlroy at +1350 to win this event for the second straight year.

Here is my first pick to win the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am; see the rest of our golf picks through Thursday.

Si Woo Kim (+2450)

Sometimes, you can just see the victory coming.

Si Woo Kim has soared up to No. 256 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) with finishes of T-6, T-2, and T-3 in his last three events. While he's one of the few in this week's field who'll be playing for the fifth straight week (he also finished T-11 in the Sony Open), his current game is perfectly suited for Pebble Beach.

Kim leads all golfers with an average of 2.06 strokes gained: approach over his last 12 rounds. He's more accurate than long off the tee, and he finished in the top 15 of this event each of the past two years.

I'll be taking Kim in 1-and-done pools this week, and I'm betting him to win at +2450 on these opening odds with a full unit. I see his odds dropping by Thursday.

💡 How I'm betting the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am

The first two rounds of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am are split between Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Golf Course, with half of the field playing each course Thursday and Friday. Both weekend rounds are played on Pebble Beach GL by the whole field. There is no cut in the 80-man field.

If you've ever played a golf simulator, you're likely familiar with Pebble Beach GL. The course setup is best know for small greens, copious bunkers, and thick and penal rough. When the wind is a non-factor, scores can go quite low, but a windy day is this course's best defense to the elite field it hosts. Spyglass Hill has smaller and firmer greens, and typically scores lower for its one round.

Iron play is most important, and I value a sharp short game when handicapping this event. Pebble Beach. Driving accuracy is more important than distance with Pebble Beach one of the few regular PGA Tour stops still shorter than 7,000 total yards. Hitting greens in regulation is a must.

Course stats

Here are the course stats for Pebble Beach Golf Links and Spyglass Hill Golf Course:

Pebble Beach GL Spyglass Hill GC

Yardage 6,989 7,071
Greens Poa annua Poa annua
Architect Jack Neville, Douglas Grant Robert Trent Jones Sr.
Comparable courses La Quinta CC, TPC Summerlin St Andrews, Country Club of Jackson

Key stats

Here are the key stats I use to handicap the WM Phoenix Open at TPC Scottsdale, with a heavy weight toward course history and past success in this particular tournament, given the one-of-a-kind fan environment and its impact on golfers:

  • Strokes gained: approach
  • Birdie or better percentage
  • Proximity from 125-150 yards
  • Strokes gained: around-the-green
  • Driving accuracy
