Love it or hate it, conference realignment is giving the college football world this banger of an early October Big Ten battle between Ohio State and Oregon on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC, Peacock) from Autzen Stadium in Eugene, Ore.

  • With both overwhelming favorites by the College Football Playoff odds, we expect the Buckeyes to cover the 3.5-point spread in our Ohio State vs. Oregon prediction
  • Ohio State has the shortest college football championship odds (+280) and a win over Oregon could move the Buckeyes to prohibitive favorites
  • One of just eight players with Heisman Trophy odds shorter than 25/1, Dillon Gabriel could move into the top four favorites with a Ducks win

The only game in our Week 7 college football predictions featuring two top-10 teams, Ohio State vs. Oregon could be one of the best games of the year.

Ohio State vs. Oregon against the spread prediction: Week 7

Ohio State to cover the spread: -3.5 (+100) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Ohio State vs. Oregon opening odds:

  • Ohio State: -4 (-110)
  • Oregon: +4 (-110)

Ranked No. 2 and No. 3 respectively in the AP Top 25, neither Ohio State or Oregon has actually played a ranked Power 4 team this season.

However, while the Buckeyes have run through each of their opponents with relative ease, the Ducks have left a lot to be desired - especially on defense. Oregon ranks just 21st in SP+ on defense and is 1-4 ATS as a result.

That includes this defense giving up 34 to Boise State with Ashton Jeanty exploding for 192 yards on the ground. Obviously, Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson aren't quite at Jeanty's level, but they're still two of the best backs in the country.

They have Ohio State ranked first in EPA per rush on offense and they should be capable of getting after an Oregon defense that's allowing more rushing yards (101.4) than seven other teams in the Big Ten.

Throwing ducks

Despite Ohio State's offense having some of the best playmakers in the country, the defense should be the reason the Buckeyes cover this spread. Jim Knowles' unit is first in the country in SP+ and top two in both EPA per rush and dropback.

That spells trouble for Gabriel, who has the Ducks ranked outside of the top 25 in EPA per dropback. He's been efficient but has the seventh-lowest ADOT in the country (6.5) and just seven big-time throws, per PFF.

That's not going to cut it against a defense allowing the fourth-fewest passing yards per game (129.8) and third-fewest rushing yards (72.6). The Buckeyes have covered in two straight, and if they do again, a $10 bet pays a $10 profit.

Jeremiah Smith anytime touchdown scorer (-115) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

It ain't rabbit hunting season; it's duck hunting season. And Jeremiah Smith is a more explosive weapon than anything Elmer Fudd was ever armed with back in the day.

Smith is having one of the best freshman seasons of all time and is a serious Heisman sleeper through five games. He leads the Buckeyes in touchdowns (seven) and has scored in every game this season.

He ranks top 10 in the country in yards per route run (3.68) and Oregon has yet to see a receiver that's even top 90 in the country in receiving yards. At this price, another Smith score would turn a $10 bet into an $8.70 profit.
