Coming off a national championship game appearance, sixth-ranked Notre Dame enters as a 2.5-point betting favorite in a challenging road environment against No. 10 Miami. I'm backing the Fighting Irish as part of our college football Week 1 predictions.

My Notre Dame vs. Miami early predictions see a benefit for the road team as the Hurricanes replace No. 1 NFL pick Cam Ward with Georgia transfer Carson Beck. The Irish reached the national championship game on the strength of the 10th-ranked total defense in FBS, and though they’re replacing DC Al Golden, I don’t see Marcus Freeman allowing this unit to fall off.

With an experienced and talented team - and a coaching staff that I trust over Mario Cristobal on the other side - I don’t expect the Irish to be fazed by the road environment in this matchup.

I expect the high-profile nature of this game in the Hurricanes’ home stadium to keep the spread from pushing beyond Notre Dame -3 before game time. Notre Dame is my preferred side, and barring significant and unexpected movement for the spread, I expect it to stay that way leading up to Sunday night.

As of Monday at the best sports betting sites, we’ve seen the line move further toward the road team (Notre Dame) after opening Irish -1.5. If we see this line move beyond the key number of -3, I'll start to get more squeamish about laying points with Notre Dame on the road, but I would be surprised to see that happen throughout the week.

All this to say, anything at the current line of -2.5 or better for the Irish is a number I like, and I'm not particularly concerned about that line shifting too much more during game week.
