After a magical season, Michigan lost two defensive stalwarts and both coordinators. Can Jim Harbaugh overcome all the departures and lead the Wolverines back to the CFP in 2022? Check out Michigan's futures odds, picks, and preview for the upcoming season.

Expectations are certainly high in Ann Arbor as Michigan is coming off of its most successful season in quite some time. The Wolverines posted an 8-1 record in the Big Ten, and Jim Harbaugh finally defeated bitter rival Ohio State. Michigan went on to trounce Iowa in the conference title game and secure the school’s first-ever berth into the College Football Playoff.

Unfortunately, Michigan’s time in the CFP was short-lived. The Wolverines got destroyed by Georgia in their semifinal matchup. That loss paved the way for an interesting offseason that saw star defensive ends Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo depart for the NFL. For a time, it looked like even Harbaugh himself may leave the program for an alternative coaching gig.

Although Harbaugh ultimately chose to stay at his alma mater, repeating the magic of last season in 2022 is certainly a tall order. Unlike last year, Michigan won’t be sneaking up on anyone as they try to get back to the Playoff.

Below, we preview the 2022 college football season for the Michigan Wolverines, with a look at the team’s futures markets and our top picks (odds via DraftKings SportsbookBetMGM, and FanDuel Sportsbook).

Michigan Team Picks and Preview

To win national championship (+6000)

Michigan’s odds of winning a national championship are long for a reason. Even when the Wolverines actually made it to the big stage a year ago, they were destroyed by a higher-quality SEC opponent. On the bright side, Michigan knows that winning the Big Ten Championship will assure them of a seat at the table.

Of course, with a loaded Ohio State lurking in the same conference, just making it to the Big Ten title game will be easier said than done. With both of Michigan’s standout edge rushers moving on to the NFL, the defensive line will require some extensive work. But new defensive coordinator Jesse Minter has solid experience returning at the linebacker positions.

Given that the defense likely won’t be able to replicate its premium level of play from a year ago, the onus will be on Michigan’s offense to take another step forward. Cade McNamara is expected to be back under center.

At the offensive skill positions, Blake Corum is back to anchor the backfield while Ronnie Bell will headline what is an otherwise inexperienced receiver corps. Michigan will need to replace a pair of starters from last year’s Joe Moore Award-winning offensive line but there are three experienced starters returning.

On paper, some may look at all of Michigan’s returning offensive production and give the 2022 team a great chance to make a run. If you believe that the Wolverines have the pieces to adequately replace their departures along both lines, a +6000 national championship price could be worth a look.

To win Big Ten (+900)

In all honesty, betting on Michigan at +900 to repeat as Big Ten Conference champs is a much more appealing wager than a +6000 national title bet. So long as the SEC is on track to be represented by Alabama, the Wolverines’ outlook at winning it all in 2022 is quite bleak.

The big game on the schedule to circle will naturally be the road trip to Ohio State on Nov. 26. If Michigan can somehow upset the Buckeyes for a second straight season, they will have the tiebreaker when it comes to winning the Big Ten East Division.

The tiebreaker ensures that even if the Wolverines were to lose their road game at Iowa or any of their three tough home conference games, they would still wind up in the Big Ten Championship Game. With the East Division once again projected to be vastly superior to the Big Ten West, Michigan would likely be at least a slight favorite in the title game regardless of their opponent.

Over 6.5 conference wins (-160)

Although a case was made for Michigan to win the Big Ten outright above, in reality, the Wolverines will likely lose their season-finale at Ohio State. Despite being able to confidently project the trip to Columbus as a conference loss, the rest of the league schedule actually sets up quite well for Harbaugh’s group.

The Big Ten will once again play nine conference games in total this season. Aside from the finale at Ohio State, Michigan could very well wind up being favored in their other eight league games. Thus, it’s difficult to predict any more than two Big Ten losses, an outcome which would still cash the Over on 6.5 conference wins.

The Wolverines are set to have home-field advantage for each of their three tough games against Penn State, Michigan State, and Nebraska. Being able to face each of those teams in the Big House will be a massive benefit as opposed to playing them on the road. When it comes to road conference games, Michigan should roll past both Indiana and Rutgers. A trip to Iowa City will be tricky, but the Wolverines certainly proved to be superior when they throttled the Hawkeyes in the 2021 Big Ten title game.

Corum to Win Heisman Trophy (+10000)

Michigan sent Aidan Hutchinson to New York as a Heisman Trophy finalist last season. If a strong 2022 campaign unfolds in Ann Arbor, Corum will most certainly have a hand in the success.

Running behind one of the best lines in the country last season, Corum put up huge numbers on the ground. If not for battling a high ankle sprain late in the year, he most certainly would have reached 1,000 yards rushing. As it turned out, Corum’s final line of 952 yards, 11 touchdowns, and 6.6 yards per carry was nothing to sneeze at.

Given the departures of Hutchinson andOjabo from the defense, Michigan will likely have to score more in 2022 to come anywhere close to replicating last season’s success. Corum appears destined to emerge as the main focal point of the Wolverines' offense. One could do much worse than a +10000 bet on Michigan’s best offensive weapon to win the Heisman when making preseason futures bets.
