Kansas vs. Texas Predictions, Picks & Odds Week 5: Will Longhorns Get Caught Looking Ahead?

Check out our best prediction for the Week 5 college football matchup between Kansas and Texas based on the best NCAAF odds.

Our top prediction for the Kansas vs. Texas college football game, based on the best college football odds from our best sports betting apps, examines the optimal strategy for capitalizing on the possibility that the Longhorns may be focused on Week 6.

This Saturday, the unbeaten No. 24 Kansas Jayhawks are set to go head-to-head with the formidable No. 5 Texas Longhorns in a matchup that appears to heavily favor the Longhorns. They have proven to be significantly stronger than most of their Big 12 counterparts.

However, it's worth noting that Texas has a high-stakes rivalry game against the Oklahoma Sooners at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas scheduled for Week 6. This raises the intriguing question: Could Kansas potentially catch Texas off guard this weekend in Austin?

Here is our best Kansas vs. Texas prediction and our college football picks (odds via our best college football betting sites; pick confidence based on a 1-to-5-star scale).

Kansas vs. Texas prediction: Week 5

Kansas Over 9.5 points in second half (-120 via DraftKings) ⭐⭐⭐⭐

This is my favorite way to play the lookahead spot for the Longhorns, because there are multiple avenues for the Jayhawks to score double-digit points in the second half. This game could be closer than anticipated, or Kansas could produce against reserves after Texas jumps out to a big lead.

The former happened in Year 1 of the Lance Leipold era, when Kansas secured a 57-56 overtime upset as a 31-point underdog in Austin. The latter occurred last year, when KU netted a pair of second-half touchdowns after UT raced out to a 41-0 lead in Lawrence.

Kansas has become one of the more potent offenses in the country over the last two seasons. This team is averaging 37.8 points per game through four weeks after ranking 21st in the country with an average of 35.6 points per contest a season ago.

More importantly, the Jayhawks have had a knack for starting slow for much of the last two years. They are averaging 17 points per game during the second half in 2023, clearing this mark in three of the four outings.

The only team to score double-digit points in the second half against Texas thus far has been Alabama. But we expect that trend to end this weekend. After all, what's really the difference between Kansas and Alabama in football?

Kansas vs. Texas best odds

DraftKings (-120)

DraftKings FanDuel BetMGM Caesars bet365
Over 9.5 second half points N/A N/A N/A N/a
-120 N/A N/A N/A N/A

DraftKings is the only shop offering this second-half line, which makes it pretty easy on where we will play this wager. It's worth noting that DraftKings has a team total of 10.5 for KU in the first half, with the Under juiced to -125.

The Jayhawks are expected to finish in the low 20s based on the team totals across our best sports betting apps. That's why the value is on KU's second-half team total in this case, though we'd understand waiting for a better number come halftime.

Texas opened as a 19.5-point favorite, but the market has been favoring Kansas ever since. The Longhorns are now listed as 16.5-point favorites across our best sports betting sites. The total started as high as 68.5 before dropping to a consensus price of 62.5.

Both teams are 2-2 against the spread entering this week's conference meeting. The Longhorns are 1-3 to the Under, while the Jayhawks are 2-1-1 to the Over.
