Maryland, home to many of our best sports betting sites, does not have a real-money online casino market. However, the state does have brick-and-mortar casinos, and the Maryland Lottery & Gaming Control Agency (MLGCA) August 2024 casino figures show solid growth.

The MLGCA reported that the state’s six venues combined for $173.9 million in revenue last month - the ninth-highest monthly total ever recorded.

Revenue was up 7.8%, or $12.5 million, from the $161.4 million generated last August. This brings the FY-to-date total—which includes July and August — to $343.7 million. This amount is 2.4% higher than the $335.7 million reported over the same two months last year. Revenue was also up 2.4% month-on-month when the casinos collected $169.8 million.

During the month, casino gaming contributions to the state totaled $73.7 million, an increase of $5.5 million or 8.1% from last August. This figure includes $53.1 million in donations to the Education Trust Fund. The remaining funds support Maryland’s horse racing industry, small, women- and minority-owned businesses, and local communities.

Which casino generated the most?

MGM National Harbor reported the highest revenue figure of $75.0 million of the six land-based casinos in Maryland. Live! Casino & Hotel came in second with $61.9 million, followed by Horseshoe Casino, collecting $14.4 million. The other three casinos – Ocean Downs, Hollywood, and Rocky Gap – collected under $10.0 million each.

Three of the casinos saw an increase in revenue compared to last August with Live! Casino & Hotel reporting a 12.4% rise, MGM National Harbor revenue is up 9.7% year-on-year, and Hollywood Casino is seeing an 8.7% increase.

However, Rocky Gap’s revenue fell 6.9%, Horseshoe Casino saw a 6.4% decline, and Ocean Downs fell 1.8%. Four of the six casinos’ revenue figures were also up month-on-month, while revenue at Live! Casino & Hotel and Rocky Gap Casino decreased.

All six privately owned casinos in Maryland offer slot machines and table games. In August, $118.5 million of the total casino revenue came from Video Lottery Terminals (VLTs), while the remaining $55.4 million was generated by table games. With 3,851 slot machines, Live! Casino & Hotel had the highest VLT revenue, at $44.5 million, while MGM National Harbor led table game revenue, collecting $30.8 million.

About Maryland casinos

Maryland has been home to land-based casinos since September 2010, when Hollywood Casino Perryville opened its doors. While the state has yet to legalize online casinos, the available legal gambling options include online and retail Maryland sports betting and the Maryland Lottery.

The MLGCA is set to publish its August 2024 sports betting figures later this month. It reported a near 35% year-over-year increase in handle in July, at $333.3 million. However, last month’s figure also represented a 13.4% decrease compared to June 2024 as the summer slowdown hit. The state is now home to 12 active online sportsbooks after Bally Bet launched earlier this summer.
