How do I use it? I don't want to see what the previous owner has on it, I just want to use it for what I use it for. Any suggestions?

As Kemalettin said, reinstall windows 7 over the previous installation.
Download a Windows 7 ISO, burn it to a DVD, change the first boot device to the DVD Drive after putting the Win7 DVD in there, installation will guide you through.

Is it running Windows? Is it the Windows password or some other program?

Otherwise re-install operating system if you don't care about seeing whats on there.

              Use OPHcrack

Ophcrack is a Windows Password cracker based on Rainbow Tables

You have to download the program and burn it to a disc. Then the disc is suppose to hash it for you and give you the password. I've used this and it works. Only thing is, I'm not sure if OPH works for Vista or Win7 yet. Works great on XP.

Need to be more specific. Windows password? BIOS boot-up password? If it is a Windows password you are better off re-installing Windows.

It's windows vista. It's a user password. Can I still just install windows 7 on it? Dell sent me a copy, can I install it on a hp?

yes you can and you should. In the installation part of w7 there will be a time to format the disk which you should do as well.

What this guy says... especially if you want to get nosey... Yes there is a working version for Vista/7... it works, but not always.

The above would not apply if it is a BIOS password, obviously.

If OPH doesn't work try these:

                                  http://www.pccmos.com/ - Bios Pass

                                  http://www.pcloginnow.com/ - Windows Pass

I've used them a few times and have worked for me.

The real question here is do those seizures offer good deals/ products. Always curious if they actually give you deals for a good product,

For some reason, if a manufacture company sent you a operating system disc(Windows), it's suppose to be use for that exact brand or Windows will be asking for the key. I wanted to put a Dell WinXP into my HP once and it setup fine, but later asked for a key(which is not good). But if I would of set it up on a Dell instead of a HP, would be perfect(without asking for key).
But you can try it once OPH didn't work. Just make sure you have the Drivers compatible with Windows7 and your Laptop model# if you decide to set up.

That makes sense, turning the auction into a competition and making a deal into shite.

Most computers now don't send disks. They install the backup copy on the hard drive. When you are booting it, hit 1 over and over. If it is saved on your hard drive you can reinstall without the key or any program. I just did it yesterday with my laptop thanks to a virus.

Thats why I said 'if you are good'....all about personality and 'Geek profiling' to pick the right one.

I took my wife's laptop in a few times for it and never got charged. Now we have the 'any 3 computers for free' fix it plan we got with the new Macs so no worries.

But it can be done for free...just have to play the part and get it done.

I do too, but it does me no good being locked and having no internet access.

Format the disk and reinstall linux. If you arent smart enough to get through the password lock on the computer, you likely are smart enough to dig through all the deleted files.
