Traveling alone?

Who here has gone out of the country alone? what do you guys think of traveling alone? any advice/tips?

I'm 19 going to be alone staying at a hostel for 2 nights, in Amsterdam.

Going alone is highly underrated, it´s a great way to take a time-out from everything that is your daily life.

Nah...The only thing I've heard is they cut the number of coffee shops (hash bars) in half and won't be giving out any new licenses.

If Amsterdam ever got rid of their redlight district and cracked down on drugs they'd become another boring ass Brussels or Copenhagen. Nice cities I'm sure but no one really give a shit about going there.

I've been to Amsterdam a couple of times.

It is pretty safe and mellow.

hill st blues should be your first stop, redlight and the live sexshows are an eyeopener. at night black dudes will try to sell you yayo and they are very persistent just dont make eye contact and dont respond to them other than that enjoy your stay.

travelling alone can be great. you get to experience the place as you want to, create memories for your self.

take a look at a map of the area youll be in. familiarize yourself somewhat with major intersections and landmarks. if youre out walking or biking, you should always have some idea as to where you are.

not that youll necessarily need to, but if you are lost or something, dont spend too much time looking at a map. being lost isnt the end of the world, appearing lost to any weirdo on the street isnt great.
go into a bathroom or somewhere private and take a look at a map.
if youre in a bad area, you should always look like you know where youre going.

Best advice you could receive. Always look like you know where you're going. Sure you'll possibly look like a foreigner, but don't look like a lost foreigner, easiest targets.

Amsterdam is an excellent city for meeting other travelers. My first day in Amsterdam I went to a coffee shop, I was sitting by myself rolling a doobie, and had a table of crazy Germans invite me over. I ended up hanging out with them for 2 days of druken debauchery.

Morale of the story: Don't try to keep up and drink beer for beer with crazy Germans. You might die.
