The Odds One Season, Three Gamblers, and the Death of Their Las Vegas by Chad Millman.

Non-fiction. Had a tremendous influence on me the very next college baskets season. Alan Boston's exploits in the book motivated me and I never worked harder before or after that following season. Never played as loose and wild as I did that year with cappin' help from Mrs. Jones. Never had a better season before or after either. It was the wild west offshore with so many shops basically giving away the store. It was the perfect storm....and lady luck smiled.

Ended up with a couple of race horses myself. Read this book if you haven't as yet. It is now 11 years old. Still waiting for someone to write a screen play for this one.

Just started reading The Nerdist Way by Chris Hardwick. It's quite amusing... and actually pretty informative.

If you watch it with the idea that it's 40 yrs old and was shocking at the time....I likes it.

I think many of the books written by Ken Follett are outstanding including:
                                    The Pillars of the Earth
                                    Dangerous Fortune
                                    Night Over Water
                                    Eye of the Needle
                                    World Without End

Wilbur Smith writes a series of books about Sean Courtney from South Africa, and another series about ancient Egypt that are great.

I used to read about one book a week before I found this site, now it is about one every three.
Read these 2 on your recommendation, loved them. Thanks! Planning to read Fall of Giants next.....

A couple of books that I've read recently...

A Drunkards Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives. I really enjoyed this book. I think a lot of people here at SBR would enjoy it too. Especially if you have an interest in out of the ordinary type probability scenarios.

MUSTAINE. This is an autobiography of the Megadeth founder and frontman Dave Mustaine. If you even remotely like Megadeth this is a must read. I'm not a huge fan of Megadeth but I do like some of their music and I've always been sort of intrigued by Dave Mustaine. Mostly because he's always sort of struck me as a self destructive genius... and people like that almost always intrigue me. The parts about MetallicA in this book were my favorite as MetallicA is my favorite band of all time. If I told Dave that in person he would likely punch me in the face... repeatedly.

                                        This thread needs a bump.

I'm around halfway through "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman. I'm really enjoying it so far. It's a non-fiction book and it's not about gambling but I think anyone that has ever gambled on anything would benefit from reading this book.

The book is far better, not even close. Much more graphic. Film does no justice as to how twisted and sadistic the novel is.

Lots of great books but two of the best I've ever read are from the same guy: Vonnegut

                                                      Breakfast of Champions

                                                      Palm Sunday

(although IIRC in Palm Sunday he gave both of these books a letter grade of C.
That's in keeping with Vonnegut tho.....)

The book is far better, not even close. Much more graphic. Film does no justice as to how twisted and sadistic the novel is.

I remember there are different versions. Books first published in the US omitted the last chapter, like the movie. It's probably more fitting, but I think more recent publications contain the complete original book.

For comedy fiction, I like the condensed Warren Commission Report. For intrigue fiction, Six Days of the Condor by James Grady. Best mystery for me is Curtain by Agatha Christie

                                                              Good thread!

Here's a few of my favorites:

The Collector - John Fowles. Nice suspense novel about a man who kidnaps a hot chick and keeps her in his basement.

The Agony and the Ecstasy - Irving Stone. A biographical novel about Michelangelo. As much about art as it is the artist. Must read for anyone who is interested in the arts.

Song of Fire and Ice Series - George R R. Martin. Like many have mentioned. Amazing if your into sci-fi-fantasy.

The Good Guy - Dean Koontz. Another suspenseful novel. I highly recommend Koontz.

Enjoyed hearing what you clowns like to read
