Actually I'll throw out the suburbs of Houston Texas too.
I'll throw out some smaller towns in Ohio ( although you won't get the sports).
Some smaller towns in Pennsylvania although you won't get the sports.
Stamford conn but the cost of living won't be worth the space.

Look at these states: Texas, Arizona, North Carolina, Florida, Georgia. You get more for your money there. Do you want to raise kids in some small walk in closet in New York or do you want to have a yard and grass to mow in Charlotte while still having a city to drive to when you want?

Places to avoid? Detroit, Oakland, DC, New Orleans, Philly, New Jersey.

Rochester NY came to mind, and so did Tucson Arizona, so did Lake Tahoe.

I've never been to Salt Lake city but that might surprisingly be a good option too.

Itchy - I like this thread and I liked your original list of Tampa/Orlando, Dallas Denver. Here are some of my suggestions along the same lines...

Atlanta: Isn't that your home city? When you factor in price/what you get It has to be way up there, I wonder why you'd want out, seems like the suburbs of ATL seem like a great place to settle down when you factor in the jobs/cost of living etc.

Phoenix Arizona: Same deal as Atlanta. When you factor in the jobs/cost of living/sun etc. you get a great standard of living there.

Austin Texas: Low cost of living, cool city from what I've heard.

Charlotte North Carolina - Live in the suburbs in SC and you'll lower your tax bill. Charlotte has jobs, and has some similarities of a "real" city, and sports teams but it's a smaller big city.

It sounds like you don't want the huge big cities but Chicago and San Diego are cool if you're willing to spend the money and live in a smaller place.

Yeah I say Atlanta as the closest well known major metro area - we live on Lake Martin, Alabama but it's right on the GA border and can get to Turner Field or the Atl airport in no time. Cost of living's not bad at all but just ready for a change...and honestly other than the sports and the expensive ass aquarium or Stone Mountain...not really much to do. Crime wise, both Atlanta and nearby Columbus Ga...getting worse all the time and the school system isn't worth much either.

Been to Charlotte a few times on drive to D.C. and wasn't really impressed much and haven't heard too much either way of people liking it long term.

Austin - was on the initial list just because my wife's a Texan...talked her out of it and Galveston but I'm okay with Dallas area as of now. Austin is 50/50 really...big college sports town, still relatively close to Houston if we wanted to venture back there....just a little more pricey on houses for what you'd get overall for the money....Texas is weird like that...take Houston area for instance (Spring/Cypress) you can get a huge house for cheap, but those MUD taxes and property taxes are insanely high...and Austin's home prices are still a bit inflated for the actual houses.

Arizona - I have no clue about it....never lived or even visited for more than a layover or driven straight through twice heading to L.A. I'll look at it more

Texas is far and away the strongest state in the US, economy-wise. Our housing market has stayed strong, job market is good, and no state income tax. Fantastic suburbs all around Dallas. Greatest food in the country.

Sports are huge in Texas, especially Dallas. High School football is bigger than anywhere in the US. Rangers have a wonderful ballpark, and future with this team is beyond bright. Mavs are a juggernaut (including this year!), and the Stars are a top 5 franchise over the past 15 years, including a Stanley Cup in '99.

We are also home to America's Team.

Lake Tahoe was just there in Feb....amazing place. But waayyy too expensive to actually live...I wouldn't mind living in Reno on Nevada side since the drive from the Reno/Tahoe airport was fast as hell and the correlation of cost of living....not bad. You can still get great views from Reno but I remember saying it while we were leaving and my wife said "It's too....brown looking" ....that happens in a desert environment
If I hit the lotto - I'm all over S Lake Tahoe but otherwise....only dreaming Our house price range would only get a 1000 sq ft wooden building nestled between the ski lifts on Heavenly

Denver is the best of these three. As others have mentioned there's a lot to do there indoors and out. Lot of hippies though.

Traffic in Dallas/Ft Worth is horiffic. If I were to move to Texas, San Antone would be my choice.

Utah is a nice state, check out St George. 30 minutes from Mesquite, NV hour and a half from Vegas.

A lot of people are moving to the southwest, I was one of them. Smaller cities like Flagstaff and Santa Fe are nice, don't know about the schools though. Also, a lot of hippies.

whoever told this guy to move to rochester, ny must be trying to sabotage his life. lived here all my life and there isnt a more dull, uninviting, strange, perplex place in america. murder rate is highest per capita outside of michigan cities (flint, detroit, etc.) and maybe DC. no pro sports teams and the city is ROUGH. winters are terrible so i hope you like shoveling and waiting for people to stop and help you after you spin out on the highway. that being said, i wouldnt trade my experience here for anything, but god knows i gotta get out of here soon. hope you find what youre looking for whereever you move to

Greater Cleveland has everything that you're looking for: hiking (Emerald ring), fishing, sports, affordable living, best Clinics in the world, numerous museums, Cleveland Orchestra (top 3 in the world), big industry, little Italy, unbelievable Zoo, rain forrest, botanical garden, Crawford auto & aviation museum, Flats (nightclubs), soon to be completed Aquarium, rock hall of fame, football hall of fame only 40 min away, greatest roller coaster park on our planet Cedar Point is only 40 min away, great waterfalls, parks, golf courses and of course- the Lake Erie. Just not in the cards for L.A. and besides I can't see the family setup playing out there along with the money......as excited as I am to finally be planning to buy and stay for change and not have to worry about moving every few years....damn it's kinda hitting home that it's all downhill from here .

Definitely leaning Colorado....but still liking Dallas and trying to get a good feel for the midwest. If this isn't set in stone by end of June, I'm drawing out of a hat dammitt!

I have family in Orlando, FL, I have lived outside of Portland, Or, and have recently moved to Salt Lake City, UT. Orlando is a fun place to visit, but to live there, I don't know if I could handle the humidity during the summer. I love being close to the beaches and there is tons of stuff to do with the fam. Not sure how the schools are, but I know several affordable private schools that are worth checking out. There are a lot of colleges and universities to check out as well...though, not sure how old your kids are. I love Portland, OR as a city, but the economy seems to always hit the Pacific Northwest harder than other areas of the country (takes the longest to recover too). Some of the Suburbs are nice and relatively affordable, the school systems are eh, and traffic can be an issue. The positives are there are lots of outdoor activities to do, the winters and summer are mild (rains a lot though!), and people are pretty friendly. Salt Lake City has been a nice surprise...thought the whole Mormon thing would be a lot worse than it really is (though smaller towns are pretty mormon strong). I am speaking from someone who lives on the East Side of the city. Pluses are it's a family oriented city, crime is relatively low (again, East side perspective), taxes are reasonable (way better than Washington and Oregon), the economy is pretty resilient (compared with my exposure to Washington, Oregon, and Orlando), there are a lot of outdoor opportunities (entertainment and activities are not nearly as dynamic as Orlando, which is hard to beat), and the schools, again on the East side, are pretty descent. Because salt lake is a grid city, their Trax public transportation system is excellent, especially if you live relatively close to one of the stations...probably one of the most effective systems and planning that I have seen. Let me know if you have any other questions about Portland, Or (or Vancouver, Washington, or Salt Lake City, UT (I live in Sandy, but have friends in other sub cities...Draper, Holiday, Midvale, and Provo). BOL in choosing! Also, I am amazed at how how patriotic Salt Lake (Sandy is specifically). On any given holiday, every single house has a flag waving (Boyscout service that people support)...I'll have to post a pic...pretty stunning...
