Or you could move 5 minutes away from the city into PG where Ive been for the past 10+ years... where we had 19 murders within the first 20 days of 2011. All 19 murders took place in PG County.

#44I moved to Vancouver , Washington last June from a small town in Mississippi.. Only 15 minutes from Portland , OR , and about 3 hours from Seattle , accessible via Car , Train or a short flight.
TONS of hiking/camping options through here and the Summers are wonderful.. About four months of sunshine.. The rain isnt as bad as everyone makes it sound.. Since November , its probably rained 3/4 of the days , but its not like torrential downpours.. Hell , put on a jacket and a hat and you wont even know its raining..
Its great for raising kids here , There is a park everywhere you turn it seems like and behind that is a different school. Like any town , there are some bad parts and especially closer to the downtown area , but if you live in a suburb a few miles away , you wont have any troubles with that..
You obviously have the big city of Seattle with sports there , but you also have the Trailblazers in portland and a semi pro hockey team(winterhawks.) They are also looking at moving a single A(padres) team to the local community college in the next two years. Then its only a 3 hour drive down the Eugene to watch the Ducks.Comment -

Where in Miss? When you say small, be specific....guarantee I know it....like when someone's from Verona they say "tupelo" or from Brandon, it's "jackson"

True. I always stay with a buddy that works at the State Dept....lives close to the Pentagon and his apartment's straight across from the transit....some good bars there too. I took some classes at George Mason years ago so we go out there and all around Georgetown.

Been to Biloxi several times...mostly hit Tunica by Memphis though...and if I just HAVE to play cards while visiting Magee...would drive over to Vicksburg at their little setups.
Not much to do in Magee/Mendenhall is itbetter off just having your friends meet you on Hardy St in the Hub city.

Nothing against those cities....but like I mentioned, I have to be practical, more of a family move to relax and spend time with the kids as they grow (assuming the 2nd one comes along soon)......can't necessarily afford to spend $2900 a month in Boston for 800 sq ft with a wife and kids right? Well, and still have the free time and all.
Suburbs or piece of land less than 10 acres within easy commute to the city and other things within the $250-$450k budget to buy.....can't get that in Manhattan nor Boston unfortunately.Comment -

#64Move to Portland, Oregon or Canada.
I'm sure there are some good spots in the Northeast and Midwest that are pretty sweet. Any town with less than 200,000 people is probably alright.
Don't move to a huge city filled with hate and violence. Seriously, the future generations in these huge cities are screwed! The kids don't stand a chance.Comment -

Did not think of Madison....flew under the radar.
Know anything about Minnesota while I'm thinking about it?? Soon as I read Wisconsin my brain said Packers games and Brett Fa......ohhhh he's moved one to Minny AND again but still Vikings/T-Wolves and Twinkies games
Yessir I got the eye roll from my wife when I look away from the laptop and said that to her in that order after "hey why didn't we write down Madison Wisconsin, the have..... "Comment -

#66Itchy - I like this thread and I liked your original list of Tampa/Orlando, Dallas Denver. Here are some of my suggestions along the same lines...
Atlanta: Isn't that your home city? When you factor in price/what you get It has to be way up there, I wonder why you'd want out, seems like the suburbs of ATL seem like a great place to settle down when you factor in the jobs/cost of living etc.
Phoenix Arizona: Same deal as Atlanta. When you factor in the jobs/cost of living/sun etc. you get a great standard of living there.
Austin Texas: Low cost of living, cool city from what I've heard.
Charlotte North Carolina - Live in the suburbs in SC and you'll lower your tax bill. Charlotte has jobs, and has some similarities of a "real" city, and sports teams but it's a smaller big city.
It sounds like you don't want the huge big cities but Chicago and San Diego are cool if you're willing to spend the money and live in a smaller place.Comment -

#70There's no question about it......Dallas is your only choice here.
Texas is far and away the strongest state in the US, economy-wise. Our housing market has stayed strong, job market is good, and no state income tax. Fantastic suburbs all around Dallas. Greatest food in the country.
Sports are huge in Texas, especially Dallas. High School football is bigger than anywhere in the US. Rangers have a wonderful ballpark, and future with this team is beyond bright. Mavs are a juggernaut (including this year!), and the Stars are a top 5 franchise over the past 15 years, including a Stanley Cup in '99.
We are also home to America's Team.
Welcome to Big D. Enjoy.
