usa has got the highest drinking minimum age- and it's got the lowest percentage of drunkards in the country - compared to european idiots who make minimum drinking age 18. Raise it to 25 and you will barely find alcoholics in usa
Drinking age is 21, lower it,raise it, keep it the same

#41I sort of agree with it being reduced to 18, but then high school seniors will all be able to legally buy it, which of course will cause alcohol to be even more ubiquitous at parties. And of course all the 18 year old seniors will buy alcohol for all their younger friends, so you'll have tons of dumb ass minors driving around drunk killing themselves or other innocent people as well. Too many Americans turn into idiots when it comes to alcohol, nobody knows how to moderate themselves. When I lived in Germany for several years, they had no where near the same kind of culture towards alcohol as we do. Tons of beer and wine in Germany obviously, but they knew how to moderate themselves.Comment -

#45lower it to 18...i used to drink bc it was the cool thing to do if you were underaged. plus the age limit didnt stop me or my friends. i think the earlier you start, the sooner you'll grow out of it. now i drink on occasions but could care less if i dont.Comment -

#51drinking alcohol should be based on IQ, not age. I know guys in their 40's & 50's that should not drink, and there are teens that are more reasonable and handle it better than some idiots.Comment -

#52Lowering it to 18 wont do anything for drunk driving fatalities. That's a cultural thing, not an age thing. If anything it will cause more. American kids are just plain retards when it comes to drinking and driving. I'd know, I used to be the biggest one.Comment -

#59Many people mention that we have 18 in europe and that works fine, but you should also consider that you can't usually drive until you're 18 either. And getting a drivers license is often more expensive, and I can imagine it is a lot harder as well.Comment -

#60Kids will get drunk either way. I agree with some of the other folks out there who mentioned that this is mainly about driving. 18 year olds are already bad enough drivers. Driving under the influence isn't going to help them. I see no reason to change it.Comment -

Seriousness aside, I'm thinking that I would remove age limits, make competency a mandatory part of substance testing, and increase penalties for UTI crimes. I add that middle part in there because I don't think someone whose body is used to a lot of alcohol and is perfectly competent at the time should be punished.

#69I don't think you can change it at this point without running into some serious issues. If the law changed today, every 18 year old in America would be out drinking tonight. In foreign countries where drinking isn't a big deal from an early age its not a problem, because parents teach their kids responsibility. Here in the States it's demonized so much that no one really sits down and teaches them how to behave. That same thing could be said for a lot of parenting issues here in the US.Comment -

#70Keeping it at 21 does more harm than good. Studies show that kids who don't drink until they go off to college will binge drink more than kids who start drinking at a younger age.
That's why I did my fair share to help prevent binge drinking by buying alcohol for minors after I got out of college.
