Well, you are basically signing an agreement to live morally like a Mormon/Latter Day Saint, and one of their dietary restrictions in their religion is caffeine.
MadTiger, who went to an undergraduate college that, as the last vestige of its Presbyterian affiliation, still requires a religious study credit.

We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men. . . . If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things (Thirteenth Article of Faith).
As a matter of personal commitment, faculty, administration, staff, and students of Brigham Young University, Brigham Young University—Hawaii, Brigham Young University—Idaho, and LDS Business College seek to demonstrate in daily living on and off campus those moral virtues encompassed in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and will
Be honest
Live a chaste and virtuous life
Obey the law and all campus policies
Use clean language
Respect others
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse
Participate regularly in church services
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code
Specific policies embodied in the Honor Code include (1) the Academic Honesty Policy, (2) the Dress and Grooming Standards, (3) the Residential Living Standards, and (4) the Continuing Student Ecclesiastical Endorsement. (Refer to institutional policies for more detailed information.)
Be honest - I called in sick to work today after an all night drinking binge. Said my eye's were hurting and I didn't see me coming in.
Live a chaste and virtuous life - Would that include my fukbuddy online account?
Obey the law and all campus policies - I think I was driving on the right side of the road when I sped through a community college parking lot drunk as hell this morning.
Use clean language - I usually floss after I cuss.
Respect others - I did honk my horn before barreling into several school students this morning. Does that also include peeps at SBR?
Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse - Dammit, why didn't they list broccoli, brussel spouts and cottage cheese? I used everything above in the last couple of hours and couldn't possibly abstain unless they offered prescription drugs. Do they have a school pharmacy?
Participate regularly in church services - My local strip club now has a collection plate. Does that count? My favorite dancer wears a cross.
Observe the Dress and Grooming Standards - So do I have to change my underwear every few days?
Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code - Heck, I seldom drink or smoke alone. I'm pretty good at encouraging others. I'm also pretty good at passing the blunt. That's a tried and true honor code.

What Recruit would ever want to go to BYU, NOW!
WHATA JOKE!...
Sorry son, you could either go to USC and F*ck any girl on campus you want... Or you could come to BYU, and if we find out you kiss a girl your not married to than you will be kicked off the team...
I understand their religion, but this program is done for good after this dismissal...

They are talking about it on the local sports radio show.
Not really an issue for me. If you sign up/agree to house rules, you abide by them, or face the consequences if caught. Just like here.
BC has better Christians anyway, from what ive heard

I guess the one thing I don't understand is, why is there no forgiveness? What happened to the "Let he who is without sin . . ." school of thought? By all accounts the player truly was remorseful. I'm all for morals, ethics, rules and standards, but none of us is perfect.

BYU recruits Mormon kids and that's how they want to live, or how they think they want to live. They rarely get non-Mormons to go there. Davies grew up in Provo, so I'm assuming he's Mormon.

All these guys know what they're getting into. There is a reason they choose to go to BYU. This happens every few years at this school when one of the athletes gives in to the urges the rest of us heathens live by. I remember one of the football players got kicked off a couple years ago.

its not like this is something sprung up on recruits at the last minute, they are well aware as to what they're getting into before they sign.
surely athletes have been suspended/expelled for this type of behavior before, just so happens this time around it garners national media attention because BYU is a powerhouse this year.

I am going on the assumption that most of us on here are not Mormon. That said, as archaic the rules may seem, it is their rules. It's not like you sign up to play for BYU and are shocked to find out you can't drink tea, have sex, and must be clean shaven at all times. As far as their program goes, this situation will not in any way effect the future recruiting classes. Most of the guys on the team had parents that went to BYU. It is a very legacy based school.
