The protection would be in the minerals deal if you read between the lines .

We will never accept just [a] ceasefire,” Zelensky said. Kyiv has repeatedly warned that freezing the battlefront would allow Moscow to fortify its positions, entrench in occupied territory and rearm to come back for more.

The USSR was trying to push a global communist expansion and propping up brutal communist dictatorships. Russia doesn't want Ukraine joining NATO out of fear that if it attacks Russian troops in Crimea and Russia fires back, Article 5 doesn't get invoked.
