Join Hexversi Tourney #9 by Mar 27th. Win up to 2500+ Pts SPECIAL Section for Newbies
There are 3 different ways for you to win 500 Points or MORE.

    #1
. Win the most games(not %) in this Tourney out of anyone on SBR besides myself. blankoblanco won this in the last Tourney with 12 total Wins, and he came in 2nd place in the entire Tournament out of the starting field of 38 players.

    #1A.
In this Tourney there will be a SPECIAL for Newbies(anyone besides DanielEspinosa, blankoblanco, Ian, gauchojake, jackpot269, and Las8 will qualify) to win 500 points. If none of the Newbies win a game, I will give 500 points to the Newbie that came closest to winning a COMPLETED game. If any of your opponents should timeout(this is not uncommon in the 1st Round) you will still be credited for the win. Nobody won in this in the last Tournament, as their were no new SBR players in the last Tournament.

#2. Section Winner Prediction Picks. I will explain this more thoroughly once the Tourney starts. If you tie or beat me, it's worth 1000 points. But if you don't tie or beat me, it's only worth 500 points. blankoblanco Won this in the last Tournament, and he tied with me, so he Won the full 1000 Points. (Hopefully Ian will forgive my initial blunder)

#3. Tourney Winner Prediction. Las8got this one right in the last Tourney and Won the 500 points. My only rule is, you can't pick me as I will be picking myself. There are now several very strong and well known Othello players in the Othello community that usually play in these Tournaments, including at least 2 that are the #1 Ranked Othello players from their country of origin. So, I am usually no longer the favorite in these Tournaments anymore.

Also, if anyone on SBR should WIN the Tourney you will Win 2000 points(or as many points as I have left).

For new players, to create an account you will need to send itsyourturn.com an email to websupport@itsyourturn.com and tell them that you want to create an account. You can tell them Holden2341 is organizing another Hexversi Tournament and you want to join it. They should get back to you fairly quickly. Please use your SBR name as your username at IYT.

Once you have an account and username created, to sign up for the Tourney, go to Tournament area and click on March 2023 Open Fast #2 Tournament by Monday, March 27. Find Hexversi and check the box and click submit down below. And you'll be good to go.

For newbies, or anyone else, you can practice on this CPU in this link below.

    http://meta-site.net/hexlo0.1/

OR you can practice on the app below.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...xagonalreversi

Also, starting on page 5 in this thread in the link below, I start giving "Lessons" on strategy tips. I'm sure most of it will sound rather confusing if you are brand new to the game. But, if you play enough games on the CPU and you want to learn some strategy, I recommend reading the lessons in the link below from pages 5 and on. There's a few on page 4 I think as well, but from page 5 and on it's mostly lessons. (Edit: I am just realizing now, if you start on page 5, there is a lot of lingo that I use, much of that I made up specific for Hexversi and some of it is Othello lingo. Your best bet is to start at post #117 on page 4, I THINK that is the first lesson. If you start from the first lesson I go over the lingo a bit I THINK. Anyway, if anyone has any questions about the lingo, like WTF does this mean? Let me know.)

I am requesting that everyone that joins this Tourney to give me 1 point in this post. This is simply so I can keep track of who has joined.

The Tournament will start on Tuesday, March 28th. I am hoping for at least 40 players or so to sign up. The last Tournament had 38 players, so I expect about the same for this one.

Hexversi is a very simple game that ANYONE can learn in a couple of minutes or less. I recommend watching the minute and a half Othello(same rules) instructional video below if you want to know ALL the rules. If anyone has any questions, let me know in this thread.

No problem. I plan on rereading this myself within the next few months or so. This is sort of like the Bible among Othello players as far as I know. Some of it can be tough to comprehend. Take your time. I printed it out in 2006, printing it out helps A LOT, but it's a lot of paper.

The Tournament has started! Try to get your Section Winner Picks in by Thursday, March 30th. You may copy others for the Section Winner picks, but if there is a tie, it will go to the person who made their picks first. Also make your Pick for Tournament Champion. You can pick anyone besides Holden2341, as that is my pick. Once a pick is taken for Tournament Champion, it cannot be selected again.

If anyone has any questions, let me know.

                  Good luck everyone!!!

I have been playing horrendous lately. I think I got a good draw tho and would pick myself anyways. I don't know much about these other two guys. I know I can beat REMO. This game kind of got me back into chess. Which I have been obsessing over lately. I really enjoy playing this games it is just hard to get reps. In chess I have at least 120 simultaneous games going right now. I can't really do that with this game. I hope that othello app you mentioned, John, will add this game to increase the population. What was that app called? I will say something to them. It can't be that hard to add.

I think it was eothello. Whichever is one of the main ways people play online that seems like a popular one and it rings a bell. I will see if they have contact information. If I were an app developer I would want to run it to increase the overall player base. I think this definitely would as well as increase the player base for this game.

Here's a link to the eOthello regular Leaderboard. But there's tons of different links you can check out at this site.

eOthello is an online Othello (also known as Reversi) community where you can play this strategy game against other players from around the world.

eOthello is a really fantastic site, I was really hoping they would pick up Hexversi, but it seems doubtful at this point. I think Mario Madrona(mmariomm) is one of the main guys that runs eOthello. He may not be able to add Hexversi because of certain copyright laws and what not, but I'm not positive.

Another site called Vint, was interested in adding Hexversi as well. They play LIVE games. I think 5 minute timers for Othello games, 5 minutes each for each player for a full game. I think they have Tournaments on weekends. A couple of different players from the site reached out to me a couple of different times, but ultimately I never heard anything back from them.

I tried recruiting players from the Othello Academy Discord, but nobody seems interested. I did manage to get sidothello to join in this Tournament at least. It's such a pain in the ass signing up at IYT, that's the worst part. Not to mention the website is ancient.

Also I totally blanked and didn't see Ryan in RCCH's group or else I probably would've picked him. RCCH is good enough to win though
Yeah, I couldn't decide between RCCH and Ryan. I usually have more trouble with RCCH, but I didn't want to have the same picks as you, so I chose Ryan. I'm hoping brother pulls the upset here. Should be some great games!

Yes, that was it! My memory isn't the best but I know you were talking about it at one point. I sent them an email below. I am curious as to their response. I would love timed games. One of my biggest issues is that I spend like 4 seconds on my moves. Same with chess I just go with my first instinct which is why I prefer 3 min blitz games in that game. The added element makes the games almost stressful I would love to play time hexversi!

                                          Hello,

I was seeing if you had any interest in adding Hexversi to your wonderful app. It is a very strategic game and I often prefer to play it over the square revision. The only issue is the only way to play against others online is on an outdated website called itsyourturn. I think if Othello players had an easier introduction to the game, instead of having to navigate that ancient website and be limited to a certain number of moves per day, they would enjoy it. There is website you can play against a computer or someone in person http://meta-site.net/hexlo0.1/ I am not sure if you are familiar with the game. The man who introduced me to this game is in contact with the hexlo web developer. I am sure I can get his information if you want to ask him anything. Thank you for your time. Please consider my proposal.

                                          Best wishes,

                                          It's worth a shot.

                                            Their response:

I had never heard of Hexversi before but it looks pretty interesting! I just played my first game of it and was able to beat the AI in that site you linked, haha.
Unfortunately, I am currently not actively developing eOthello because of a lack of time to do so. But if my circumstances change in the future, I'll have Hexversi in mind.
It wouldn't be a trivial thing to add because the site is unfortunately based on square-grid games - generalizing it to support hexagonal grids would be a bit of a challenge.

In any case, thanks for the suggestion!

Much respect to you for helping to promote this great game Las! And it's cool that you at least got a thoughtful response. I hope it can eventually become more widespread somehow

Timed/rapid Hexversi games would definitely be interesting to try! My instincts have gotten better with repetition, but it would be a very different game to have to make each move quickly. I actually used the Hexagonal Reversi app just to see if I'd still beat it giving myself ~10 seconds or less per move, and fortunately I could just based on fundamentals. It'd be something else entirely vs. good human players though

I'm curious from John specifically, how do you think you would fare at rapid Hexversi compared to the slower format of IYT? I feel like I get a lot of my edge against some opponents from having time to examine positions thoroughly, but it's also hard to know how many more mistakes the opponent might have made if they had to play fast

It's tough to say. I move fairly quickly against MOST players. But lately I find myself analyzing moves a lot more than I used to, but I'm not sure if that is helping me or not. Back when I had a membership, RCCH and myself played a few "speed" games. I could definitely tell that it affected my game. I was much more prone to making blunders. But, if a site like Vint had speed Tournaments, I would definitely play in them.

                                                  Let's go!!!!!!

I lost to REMO by 1 or 2 I can't remember. I should have swept tbh. I need to be more aggressive I think. John, if you have any feedback in that game I lost against him I would love to hear.

I gotta thank Blanco too. He picked me this time that's gotta be why I advanced. I mean when I picked blanco to win he won. He didn't pick my last time and I fuking choked. It only makes sense I advanced because he picked me in my superstitious hockey/keeper mind. To clarify I skate way too nice to be a netminder I'm still a weird goalie (goalkeeper) tho.

Anyways, I started rambling but I'm about to not have internet for a while maybe. Probably.

I'm proud I finally advanced on the easiest draw like ever. I hope I get Ryan and/or the two I have never played. But I'm most likely going to forfeit due to time.

Thanks John, blanco, and jackpot for believing in me.

I just noticed these posts today. Congrats on making it to the 2nd Round! As a general rule, if your opponent has an Unbalanced Edge, and you don't have a better move, you are usually pretty safe to play into the X-hex next to your opponents UE(as long as they can't balance out their edge, and you can wedge when need be, pockets of 3 are usually pretty safe to play into when attached to UE's). This is usually a better option than creating brand new good moves for your opponent.

I think Remo(Green) was pretty fortunate with how things turned out, but here's how I would have done it starting at move #32. If Purple plays #32... b6, Green will almost certainly play #33 b10. Purple can then go ahead and take the Western corner with #33... a11. Green will wedge with #34 b11. Purple can then play #34... a7. Green will play #35 f11. Purple can then play ...#35 f10. This will force Green to play either g9 or j6, because Green won't have a move at g10. Green will likely play #36 g9. Purple can then play #36 ...g10. This is where Purple will Gain Tempo. And now Green will be forced to play #37 j6. Purple can then play ...#37 k1 and work down that SE side. Purple should be able to Win after that.

There might have been something easier either earlier or after. I'll take a look at it again within the next couple of days or so.
