2 problems with your list:
1) you're assuming all places in those states are the same politically. The poorest region in the US is in Mississippi, and it is roughly 70% democrat.
2) NY and California do well because all the tax revenue generated by multinational corps headquartered in those places are credited only to those places. Apple is responsible for roughly .5% of US GDP, and all of that is credited to Santa Clara county.
