No rule to use the govt app to check in. Completely optional. You can simply write down a contact number/email and time there on a sheet of paper in case it's ever needed for tracing. It's hardly even monitored at every business I go in to. Because people here want to do it to help beat Covid, and get the system right so we also beat the next outbreak fast.
And no, my local hot bread shop does not report the lists to govt, or anyone.
Would you even do that much to help your community?
Also no laws say you have to wear a mask here. Just ask people to be sensible if going to be near others for more than a few mins or going to a high risk environment. And guess what? Not even any self important knob heads trying to tell others what they should choose on the street.

Because my perception is that I live on a city block, and have never seen one ambulance on my street or the lights flashing on the streets next to me. I haven't seen bodies pulled out of houses either with said ambulances because I never saw an ambulance. I said this months ago. Back in April. Well, where are all the sick people? So, from my perspective, I'm using that as evidence that this isn't some plague that needs to be slowed down. I also talked to complete strangers from time to time in passing, and all of my relatives, friends, and acquaintances. Yet, one guy out of hundreds of people knew 3 people that were "hospitalized" from COVID. Yet, even that guy was questioning if they really had "COVID". Again, its the reality check test. The governments can't beat the people w/o there media and bullshit. The people will tell you the reality on the streets. The government will tell you lies. I will go with my tests of perception over what your Queen Lizard "CROWN" government tells you day-to-day.
So, again, there can be no argument b/w us because one believes this is something that needs to be beat, and the other doesn't believe it is anything more than a flu with additional problems than the average flu.
The USA hasn't lost anything. See what you don't understand or maybe you do, I won't speak for that, is that the USA has the most guns in the populace in the world. They can already shut you down, and lock you down, and chip you, and do whatever they want to you. Melbourne had a serious lockdown for about 3 months, with people required to stay home unless for an approved reason to be out.
Given that the outbreak they were responding to caused 90% of the entire countries deaths, and the response worked, I would say the next state election there will tell you if their current leader went too far or not. Polls I have read say the locals supported him during it and still do. It's just outsiders screaming it was "unfair" somehow.
Most of the rest us in the country thank them for the severe inconvenience they tolerated.
Did not read your gun article to refute, but ask your mate if he thinks he would have any trouble buying or owning a gun? (assuming no criminal record)
The answer is no real problem. You need to join a hunting club or a target shooting shooting club or be a farmer or someone else with a reason to need one for work. Of course we also have a lot more limits on automatics, magazines and hand guns, but lets not go into that.
Self protection is not an accepted reason is really the only thing Australian laws have that are incompatible with with what most American gun owners would find acceptable imho.
It really does not feel like I am restricted from owning guns or going hunting as I did regularly before the new laws came in.
But what is noticeable is how there were mass shootings constantly all my life, like at least one a year. Since the laws changed there has only been a handful and those have mostly been determined extremists instead of mentally ill people with an arsenal.
And it doesn't feel to me like my rights are unreasonably restricted as any trade off.
