Yes, the 1917 immigration act was essential for the Country otherwise you'd have 35 million Europeans coming over post WW1.

Also implemented the language requirements. I don't think there's any shame in limiting the number of people you take in if there's a world conflict.

Your point on Nixon is probably accurate...JFK, RFK, MLK, LBJ not running and HHH being held back by LBJ Vietnam policy gave Nixon a lifeline to run he otherwise wouldn't have had after his '62 gubernatorial defeat....but Nixon was also a brilliant foreign policy maker and seasoned political figure, appearing on 5 Presidental tickets (equaled only by FDR). Nixon was very much a moderate Republican and much if our current oversight in environment, climate, health, food and school can be traced back to his administration...the guy could lead and get things done.

He was a great President. Only the shortsighted think otherwise.
