One of the biggest misconceptions some posters have is that moderators aren't allowed to interact with the board.
Don't you realize that virtually every one of us were posters before we became mods?? Why would we just stop??
Our bosses understand this and encourage us to post, and allow us to express our opinions just like everyone else.
If you had a mod, of any color, who was an obvious racist using forbidden words and wishing death on certain ethnicities, then obviously that would be bad.

And it's not like you have a moderator banning ppl just because someone might disagree with them.

Keep in mind we have to monitor and moderate the board, and although the political forum allows more leeway, we still have to check it, and at the same time we may choose to comment.

The political forum at TheRx is far worse than this one,.and requires more moderation than here, but one thing that haa never happened there is a member complaining about who should or shouldn't be allowed to participate.

I personally think that mods should mod and posters should post. If you are a poster who gets a job as a mod, then you should trade your opinion for a paycheck. As stated earlier, it's a pretty clear conflict of interest. I am very well aware that SBR does not feel this way. If they want topic starters and pot stirring then perhaps a different position should be created.

As long as whatever happens in the posting stays in the posting and moderating remains for when moderating is necessary there should be no problem.

If a poster in a heated discussion starts moderating to heat up the discussion, that's probably not ideal

Moderators most definitely should be topic starters and JJ Gold is enough pot stirring for all of them combined...lol.

It doesn't have to be a conflict of interest, in fact, it's not at all, but that doesn't mean it can't be abused. An existing avenue of abuse doesn't automatically create a conflict of interest.

But if there is no self control among those with the job, then it is what it is.

It seems to me that moderating isn't just looking at a list of rules and seeing if anyone breaks them.

It's seems that moderators are best served mingling with the community and getting to know posters and their style a bit. To be around for that can be vastly different than just looking at a poster's history to catch up (which is still valuable of course).
