Have you been on the "dark web"?
Have any of you delved into the dark web (not to be confused with the "deep web"...two different animals).

I've been curious about it and even went as far as downloading the Tor browser, but never got further with it than opening it and confirming that it was connected to the Onion network. I'm guessing I went onto an NSA watchlist as soon as I started the download.

But I read an article earlier that says 96% of information on the internet is contained in the dark deep web. That seems outlandish to me. As vast as the "surface" internet is, it's only 4% of what's out there?

And from what I've read, the dark web has legitimate information...not just thugs, criminals and terrorists. It just happens to be that, as the most secure network available, that is the domain that they choose.

As you may know, part of the privacy aspect of the Tor browser is that it bounces a connection off of several servers before it reaches its final destination, thus making it very difficult to trace. But I read in another place (book: The Art of Invisibility) that the NSA realizes their shortcoming in being able to track this type of traffic, so in the moniker of "if you can't beat them, join them", they actually own a number of the Tor bouncing servers (anonymously of course)!!!

Any experience with the dark web? (I'm not with the NSA...wink, wink)

I've been curious as well, but never will. A lot of nefarious mofo's inhabit the dark web.

If you get in deep, there are some evil geniuses that wouldn't think twice about exploiting you in any way they could.

As far as I'm concerned, you're only looking for trouble if you venture there.

One reason I may be more wary than others is that my laptop was hacked in 2018. I searched high and low trying to figure out what was going on and what the vulnerability was. I finally discovered that one of my neighbors was gaining access through Bluetooth. I disabled it and it stopped.

I went on a couple of markets through dark.fail just to check it out and satisfy curiosity... didn't buy anything. I knew what I was in for, but something that surprised me was how small scale most of it was. The large majority of hard drugs were sold at retail quantities, and very few sellers had sold more than a few hundred items. I was also surprised that almost all sellers were shipping from outside the US. I was expecting to see kilos being wholesaled from abroad and American sellers distributing thousands of retail amounts... not the case at all.

The counterfeit section was interesting. The luxury item sellers had been on for months and had moved fewer Louis Vuitton and Rolex knockoffs than Canal St. would likely move a couple of hours. The counterfeit item that did appear to sell quite a bit was counterfeit money, which to me seems like one of the worst things to buy from both a practical and ethical standpoint.

The markets I checked out were empire and icarus.
