The late night talk show era pretty much died when Letterman and Ferguson left.
Today's crop is rubbish, it's a sad state of affairs when David Spade's show might be the best of the rest.

The current tonight show hosts are a good reflection of the dumbing of our society. The “humor” now if you can even call it that amounts to the equivalent of fart jokes. Seth Meyers is just not funny at all. I don’t think I could sit through his whole show without shoving a fork in my eyeball. Jimmy Kimmel has potential to be funny but got sucked into identity politics /bashing trump and now is a tool. If he had good writers and was allowed to say wha the wanted I think he at least could be funny. jimmy Fallon seems like someone I’d hire for a five year olds bday party to jump around and be goofy and entertain children. I remember staying up late to watch
Conan in my teens back in his hay day. He was much better in the red headed step child role after Leno aired.
Daily show was pretty goood in the beginning with Craig kilbourne and even Jon Stewart. Even if you don’t agree with Stewart’s politics the guy had some good dry humor and some intelligence.
Too young to remember Carson and Leno/letterman were heading out already when I started watching.
I guess I’ll go with Conan

I agree. It should be the place to go for just some good everyday fun/jokes. The political/Trump crap just gets exhausting. We get it... he says dumb shit, his kids say dumb shit and political sattire has a place. Not every joke though. I haven't watched late night since Letterman left. Maybe I'm the prick.

Late Night Trump-bashing is more about a show’s demographic focus, than it is about humor, which, for me, gets pretty old (which I am – old, that is). Thing is, Trump says too much dumb shit for show writers (as well as news media writers) to ignore, which is why, IMO, he should shut the hell up, or at least stick to the teleprompter. If he did, ratings for guys like Colbert would dry up and blow away. I like his “Meanwhile” segments, but boy – does he get old. Jimmy Fallon may be funny to 17-year-olds, but he leaves me thinking “Huh?” too much to find funny. Seth Meyers, even with the material Trump provides, just isn’t funny at all (he’s more like watching MSNBC); Kimmel hates a tad too hard; and I have no idea why James Corden is even on the air.

Jay Leno and Craig Ferguson were the best. Never cared for Conan. Letterman was okay (a kind of dumbed-down Dick Cavett), Carson, too. was just okay. Going back further, I really liked Steve Allen and kind of liked Jack Paar.

Bottom line, I watch Colbert almost every night, because it’s the “our” time for my wife and I, and she’s a raving anti-Trumper. I leave my head-phones on, listen to Bach, and pretty much nod off.

Before he got into the ‘Who’s going to take over for Johnny Carson battle and ultimate switch to the prime time slot where a tamer Dave emerged,’ his shows in the 80s and early 90s were fukking classic.

It's unreal to me that he's had a show for so long. Super phony, unfunny, fake-laughs at everything, constantly interrupts his guests because he's an attention whore who can't stfu for 15 seconds. Awful
