The world got a little healthier, with warmer weather and lockdowns still in place for most countries. Sweden, Canada, the UK and US are still doing the worst, and with economic pressures mounting, things could get even worse. S. Korea is a good example. Given the way its infection and death rates are among the world’s best, it reopened Seoul nightclubs. When infections suddenly spiked and was quickly sourced to those nightclubs, they were immediately shut down again. If there is single country that would know how to safely reopen, S. Korea would be the one, but even they haven’t found the model for doing so. (They even had to start testing again, something they hadn’t done in a while.) Sweden, still a mostly wide-open European country, which guards its testing numbers like a state secret, now leads all its neighbors in rates of infections and deaths – but they’re still happy as clams. Getting sicker, and dying faster – but always smiling. I’ve removed China, and its hopelessly unbelievable numbers, and I’ll be adding Brazil to the tracking list next week.
In the USA, warmer weather, which mitigated Covid 19 spread in the Northeast, hasn’t had a similar impact in the South and West – where Tennessee leads the pack. Deaths spiked in Pennsylvania, but more troubling are Virginia and Arizona, which saw significant increases in both infection and death rates.
