Probably absolutely no chance of this passing what do you all think?

Even children 16 and up would qualify as an adult and get $2000 in the family plus you get the dependent credit of $500

Can you imagine a family of 3 getting $6500 a month tax free who the hell would want to go back to work?
Not that I've gotten the 1st mother effing check

The Democrats will propose this ridiculous idea, the Republicans will shoot it down, then the Democrats will claim that the Republicans do not want to help the 98%. See how the game is played?

It is the same concept has the girl who runs for student body president and proposes 2 hours pizza and ice cream lunches in the cafeteria, wins the election, is told no by the principal, then turns the student body on the administration.

Zero chance this passes. The government went broke sending $1200 checks to everyone. Do you think they are going to send double that to everyone every month? No chance.

This has 0 chance. There's an outside shot that in the next stimulus package they give everyone another $1200 but even that is long odds right now.

Rep. Khanna and Rep. Ryan have proposed a $2,000 per month stimulus check - here are the details.

A raise to 2k, I don't necessarily find fault with because $1200 simply won't cover one month's expenses for many.

The rest, I think, are far too generous, possibly reckless.

I have strong reservations against 16 years as the minimum qualifying age. And another $500 on top of that if the person is listed as a dependent?

They want to raise the qualifying income to $130k for singles, $260k for married couples. I have difficulty sympathizing with anyone who earns that level and lack the foresight to have 6-12 months emergency cash in a savings account.

A more focused approach might be keeping the qualifying income as the first round of checks. A small bump higher...maybe but not the levels they're proposing.

Allocate the rest to those who genuinely need it - those who've lost their jobs and small business owners who need to make payroll and rent.

Then see how the economy evolves, closely watch Covid-19 data, then make necessary adjustments on a 3rd round of checks. It's not forward thinking to lock yourself into paying $2k per month for six months. Add some flexibility to the program.

And I completely agree about this proposal removing or reducing incentives to return to the work force (when safe to do so) and contribute to the economy.

What I like about Canada's method is they're at least attempting to weed out free riders who try to exploit the plan.

First, they must go through an application process, and then:

"If the federal government determines that someone received an income support payment for which they did not qualify, they will have to repay that amount as soon as they can." Posted March 25, 2020.

Obviously some who don't deserve the money will succeed, but there's accountability built in to recoup losses.

Recently, they decided to widen the criteria to qualify. Posted on April 6, 2020:

"Trudeau said there will be adjustments to the program in the coming days to include people such as gig workers, contractors and volunteer firefighters who work 10 or fewer hours per week. He also said there would be support for those who continue to work but are making less than they would through CERB, such as home care workers or people caring for vulnerable seniors in long-term care facilities."

This, overall, appears much more precise than what's being proposed in the U.S.

I think a second check between $1200 and $2000 to those earning 75k or less isn't a terrible idea.

Sure, some will get funds they don't need. The telecommuter who hasn't lost any income (may even be saving money in transportation costs). Or the guy collecting unemployment with no health issues.

But there are also people on the margins who get their hours cut and perhaps live in a state where they cannot file for partial unemployment benefits. Or the unemployed who incurs emergency medical bills. And these people have to get the benefit check in the first place - which some appear to have great difficulty doing:

And for people in both groups, there's also the (admittedly debatable) Keynesian stance the stimulus payments will increase consumer spending and thus increase economic growth. Of course, consumer confidence MUST improve first. And it will as Covid-19 becomes more and more controlled.

This is a dumb ass idea along the line of minimum wage of $15 an hour. If somehow this passes, you can bet that inflation will soar even more than it will already. We just can't print money out of thin air like we have been doing since the 70's. Eventually fiat currencies will catch up to you and then your fukked.

Speaking in terms of single average incoming earning American. Yes some got $0, some got $1700 for having a kid under 17 etc. I realize that. Hell somebody somewhere probably got $5400 for having a bunch of young kids.
