The field at South Carolina's Williams-Brice Stadium will have to be replaced after it hosted a Beyonce and Jay-Z concert, the Associated Press reported.
Field maintenance for the university will spend Monday installing more than 90,000 square feet of Bermuda grass after the grass died due to the concert.
According to Clark Cox, the school's assistant athletic director in charge of turf and landscaping services, the school installed a protective hard cover over the field for when Beyonce and Jay-Z's stage and equipment arrived for the concert, but when it was over Tuesday night and the crew removed the cover, the grass still died.
"We would not have done this if we believed there was a safety issue," Cox said. "My job and our entire ground staff's job, our No. 1 priority in everything we do, is safety and welfare of our student-athletes."
More than 40,000 people attended the concert, including football coach Will Muschamp and members of the team.
The replacement turf will cost between $150,000-$200,000, but will be covered by concert promoters. According to Cox, the sod is easy to install and doesn't need to set.
