the safe side of what? Have you ever seen an eclipse before? It's sunny and the it gets dark for a minute. Its over like that. Trump is standing there with his glasses in his pocket, the crowd starts rumbling so its obvious its getting close so he looks up, like any person would, and sees that its "this far away", he then proceeds to put on the glasses.

Now I suppose you could sleep with them on the night prior and wear them as soon as you wake up right up to the eclipse, and then continue wearing them the rest of them day just to be extra cautious. Your choice.
