I just went to Subway and they had a tip cup on the counter. This is one big pet peeve for me. Don't get my wrong, I will always tip a pizza driver or a waiter/waitress, but does it make sense to be tipping at subway ? They don't do anything extra for me, they don't come to my table and refill my cup, they don't come out and take my order while I sit on my arse texting. They don't deliver my food to my house. WHY the FK should I be tipping at Subway, Carls JR., Jersey Mikes, etc ??? I just hate it and I feel like if you don't tip they kind of have a crappy attitude with you. I watched the 2 guys in front of me, one guy didn't drop anything into the tip cup and the cashier didn't so much as say thanks. I feel its just tacky to take a paper cup and write "TIPS" on it and put it on the counter. Years ago when I worked at McDonalds, if we tried that garbage we would have been fired by the manager. It makes me question the leadership of these restaurants when they allow that crap. I live in Washington state, we have the highest statewide minimum wage. They make $10 minimum to work in fast food. Im not trying to be heartless but that's all you deserve, its a starting out job. Im not trying to disrespect the job, a lot of us started out in fast food, but its a starting out job, and don't put a paper cup with the word "tips" written on it on the counter. That is no more professional than the guy standing on the street corner holding a cup. Ok end rant, that's just how I feel.

#2never put a penny in any of those tip baskets. Even if I'm getting 3-4 cents in change I'd rather pocket the change then throw it out on the way out then put it in the tip box. As you said their not providing you any service that requires you to tip them. They are simply doing their jobs.Comment -

#3Bitching about unnecessary tipping; one could feel the same reading this on a gambling forum.
In any case there is a easy fix too both. Stop going to places that don't warrant a tip and don't open dumb ass thread titles that don't pertain to gambling.Comment -

#6I don't mind them hustling for the tip....They make shit wages and work shit jobs, I guess with the tip cup they work "harder"....whatever value that is not really sure in a place like Subway
They shouldn't have a bad attitude though if you don't tip them....The manager is failing in that regard
I'll always tip the workers in this situation if they seem like good people....Pay it forward kinda guy
Use plastic though more than cash anyway so usually a moot point....unless there's a tip option on the receipt then it gets diceyComment -

#9Some girl started using a tip cup at the tanning salon. I said... what is this sh#$? What are you doing? And then it dawned on me... it's a girl working... she's trying to hustle. If some dude wants to give her a $5 in the tip jar... so be it. It's not company protocol. It's the manager or supervisor allowing it. Since Subway is independently owned an operated... the owner is allowing it for the girls.Comment -

People saying you don't have to do it what the big deal, that's beside the point
It's rude and inappropriate. It's asking, "Hey do you want to give me some extra money for just doing what I'm already paid to do, I'll say thank you and you'll feel like a generous soul? I would rather people just give me money because they want to be liked or feel guilty if they don't instead of finding a better job, and I don't feel guilty at all for putting them in this awkward position."

#11I was on the road one day and really needed to use the bathroom. Stopped by a mcdonalds to use their bathroom and when I went in the stall door was locked from the inside and I couldn't get in. So I let the manager know he sends an employee to the bathroom and the kid goes from the bottom of the stall and opens the door for me. Anyways I go in their do what I gotta do for 5-10 minutes and once I come out feeling relieved I go up to the cashier and ask to see the kid that opened the door for me. I hand the kid a dollar for his services and thank him. He of course automatically pockets the money and the manager is right their and sees the whole situation. As I walk away the manager questions him and says he can't take tips and takes the money from him. I see all this happening and go back in their and ask the manager for my money back insisting that it was not meant for him. He of course hands it over and I get out of their as quick as I can. To make a long story short if that boy at Mcdonalds doesn't deserve to get tipped no employee at a fast food restaurant deserves to get tipped, including pizza places when your carrying out. If any of these places has a tip jar its a big shame on their part.Comment -

#12Bathrooms are to be accessible for customers (they didn't know you weren't a customer) and their employees should ensure that, whether it be cleaning up a mess, keeping it stocked with toilet paper, or unlocking a stall door. Part of the job IMOComment -

#13good point but he had to crouch through a small area that was probably smelling of urine and had to get to the other side. Its not like they had a key to just open the door. In this situation he did me a favor and considering how badly I had to go he deserved to be rewarded. But the point is that if I can't give him a tip no one else deserves to be tipped.Comment -

#14And for the record... I don't tip every time at Subway. I felt the same way as CEN did when the cup was in front of me. I got use to it though. It's shocking when you first see it. But it's like anything in life... you get use to it. The girl is just trying to hustle. It's a new thing for these chicks. Perhaps, we should set up a pole or a mini stage somewhere? And let these girls really earn the tip?Comment -

If they make you feel uncomfortable, don't go back.
They are not supposed to.
For me, personally, I have bartended/waited tables for most of my life at less than minimum wage. So yeah, you gotta tip us or we're not like it too much. However, they're are still no consequences if you don't tip us. But, I think you already know that, so you're not gonna get that lecture from me.
For Subways' employees. If they want to work for tips, they should get into restaurants, not fast food.
They know that already and they know they shouldn't rely on those tips to pay bills.
They're checks pay their bills. Those tips don't make too much of a difference, in their salary.
What do I do?
Since I'm not rich, $2 and whatever coins on the return.
Not that much right?
Well, I don't know those people, but anytime I get Subway's, those people smile, and seem to go out of their way to where its almost embarrassing.
Its only 2 bucks, and they seem really happy with that.
But, like I've said before, don't feel bad if you don't tip. You're not expected.Comment -
