i prefer small talk at parties

I knew a casino host in vegas a few decades ago and he used to say he would never ask someone what they did for a living. Lots of shady folks gambling in vegas so he never wanted to put them on the spot. When he was talking to someone he would casually say something like " I would love to stay in touch do you have business card on you"? This gave the person an out that was not uncomfortable. If they said something like they don't have any on them or anything that seemed a little evasive he could either offer his and say call me anytime or he could back off. Much more subtle then "what do you do for a living?"
