i'm looking for academic papers on how to come up with power rankings...

If there are any, I suppose they would mention a few things...

1) Teams should all be ranked, relative to each other whatever scale you choose, but it's relative. The worst team could be 0 while the best is whatever the leagues call for.

2) Ratings can and should be made for all types of categories of the sport, from scoring to even coaching.

3) When comparing teams to each other, the ratings should be compared against league, division, conference, etc. medians. A median coaching rating is a tricky type of thing, but there are plenty of other more concrete metrics to use.

4) Ratings can cover total history, but it's best to deal with individual season to date ratings that also account for more recent activity. Truthfully, you can make ratings for the last four outings alone and do very well. But you need those 4 outings. Multiple ratings can be made on each metric here. It's usually a blend of averaging a few different time frames' averages. I'm sure that would include in the paper some words about how understanding where a team has been and where it is now can help determine the direction the team is headed.

5) Finally, there would be a mention of incorporating the strength of schedule and even the strength of schedule of the opponents at the time they played the team in question. The emphasis again would be about making things relative to the league, that's so important as it is a moving benchmark.

Brainstorming for the WNBA.

In the NBA, you can take the averages of a the last 5, 10 and 15 games and average them. You could even add season to date to it.

This is one way of keeping recent performance rated and we cap the early season as it comes to us.

For the WNBA it's a shorter season and we could try a season to date, last 8 games, last 4 games. Once we reach 12 games, we drop season to date and just go with averaging the averages of the last 4, 8 and 12 games.

After 12 games we are in full swing.

Those time frames can be used for any metric we choose, we just have to stay consistent when comparing strength of schedule and the strength of the opponents schedule at the time they play.
