The video is odd but I get the WW2 feel of it, and the wall must be the Berlin wall, off course.

I think you'd have to go deep to find what waters has in mind.

The Wall is the eleventh studio album by English progressive rock group Pink Floyd. It was released as a double album on 30 November 1979. It was subsequently performed live, with elaborate theatrical effects, and adapted into the film Pink Floyd The Wall.

As with their previous three studio albums, The Wall is a concept album. It deals largely with the theme of personal isolation, and was first conceived after an incident that occurred during the band's 1977 In the Flesh Tour, where Roger Waters' frustration with the behaviour of the audience reached a point where he spat in the face of a fan near the stage. Waters would come to regret his actions and spoke of his desire to build a wall between himself and the audience. The Wall features a notably harsher and more theatrical style than their previous releases. Keyboardist Richard Wright left the band during production of the album, but returned to perform during later concert performances as a salaried musician.

The Wall is a concept album that centres on the character Pink, who is largely based on the band's bassist and lyricist Roger Waters. Pink encounters obstacles throughout his life, beginning with the loss of his father during World War II, continuing with abuse from his schoolteachers, an overprotective mother, and the desertion of his wife – all of which factor into Pink's isolation from society, represented by the metaphorical "Wall" of the album title.

I remember in high school, waaaay back in 81-84, we used to smoke some great weed and go see the Pink Floyd laser light show at the local planetarium.

                        Good stuff.

The wall is partly autobiographical and partly biographical, influenced by the lives (and in the case of Syd, the death) of Roger Waters and Syd Barret. The album tells the story of the fictional character Pink who suffers tremendous pain due to the death of his father in WWII and an overbearing mother. The wall is a mental barrier built in Pink's mind to keep out the world of reality and all of its pain. The bricks placed in the wall, as in the lyric "All in all it's just another brick in the wall" refer to another brick being placed in the mental wall of isolation. Pink becomes a rock star and eventually becomes disgusted at the superficiality of stardom and turns to drugs to find release from the emptiness and the pain.

As his wall nears completion, each new brick brings Pink closer to insanity and mental breakdown. The wall is completed as Pink descends into insanity, and as soon as the wall is completed, Pink realizes the effects of total mental isolation, watching as his shattered psyche turns him into the same kind of dictatorial narcissist who antagonized the world and caused the death of his father in WWII (Hitler) and scarred his nation and was responsible for the defiling of his life from birth.

The album culminates with a mental trial that brings Pink full circle and gives a message that some interpret as the metamorphosis of Pink and some interpret as the futility of life.

Of course mama's going to help build a wall
Mother do you think she's good enough?

That has to be one of the top five albums of that era if not all-time.

I might do something like this for roughly 1968-73

                              no particular order

                              Dark side
Something Stones...maybe exile on Main ST.
                              Something Doors....Morrison Hotel ?
Some CSNY....the one where they are sitting on the old couch
                              Something Beatles....White album ?

That misses so much from the golden era of real music, but it is a start !

I'd like to get the Kinks in there, and Hendrix and so many more.

Could someone tell me what the song "Dangling chestnuts, creamy cucumbers" means? Oh right, the artist is Dick Long formerly of Dick & the DNA Milkshakes. This guy is just so talented. Every song speaks to me in an oddly strange but curious way. I just can't seem to figure out what the songs mean. Anyway, I gotta cook me some supper but would appreciate some feedback. Boiling up some nice meaty hot dogs with a good long squirt of mustard....come to think of it, maybe I'll try mayonnaise on them tonight.

The wall not only is an album that I love to listen to in order side a and side b...but it's kind of a "you have to" listen to it in order.

The live version done from the Berlin Wall is pretty amazing.

Classic. Waters doing a live show of the Wall in its entirety weekend right after Thanksgiving at MGM. Can't wait to check it out.

This and Wish You Were Here are my 2 fave Floyd albums.

The dvd can be a huge bummer under the wrong circumstances. Stil wonder why no horror film hasn't tried using Run Like Hell in it.

It's OK if doesn't have the top 15-20 selling albums of all time as his favorites. He's not here to please you and be a conformist. The guy is unique, sometimes strange, but he's cool.

I could make up a list of albums using somewhat obscure bands like....

                                                        Dire straights
                                                        Talking heads

                                                        Steely Dan

                                                        Kinks

instead of the biggest selling bands.
