High School education in America is a farce and why the stock market is in total disarray.
I didn't learn much in driver's ed. I was driving two years before I had a license anyways ( 14).

American HS grads are not comparable to Euro grads, I'll give you that one, FH !

A US diploma is nothing. I've never been axed for it. I doubt my wife graduaded, but she insists she did.....I have a running joke with her college educated daughter about where she went to graduate school.

    Wife uses "words" like Wertn't

    Wern't you there ?

    She calls and axes me....

Nobody didn't call did they ?

I know that means " did anybody call ?"

The axe stuff is a joke, wertn't isn't.

I came by your house, Laura ( her daughter), but you wernt't home ) cell phone message).

    ugh !

That is just one example !

She didn't graduate HS ( IMO), but lies about it.

That " Consumer Economics" class was in like 1981or 1982. It was intended for dolts that might need it.

I thought of school as a job I wasn't paid for....easy 100% A+ for me, worked for me.

Now I graduated in 1982. I took a few classes (2) at community college in Vegas in the 90's. ( about 1993) Specifically History and Economics. I'd pound about 3 beers before a class in the college parking lot. I got a B+ in History and an A in Economics, maybe the other way around, I drank heavily in the 1990's and the 2000's, and the 1980's

I have no idea what Canadian requirements are in 2010 to drive or graduate HS or go to University.

I would bet ( my life) that typical Canadian HS graduation is a lot harder than typical US graduation.

Western European might be harder than Canadian ?

When can a Canadian kid begin to drive ?

A US kid can get a graduated license at 16, with restrictions on it that did not exist in 1982.

maybe no passengers or no night driving, shit like that....I don't care I'm 46. There are some restrictions....I don't care I'm not 16.

In 1982 you just got the license.

I really like ( sic) when the wife calls me and says....

                " Didn't anybody call, ( while I was gone) "

I don't know how to answer that one, it freezes me, disgusts me, repulses me....all at the same time. the double negative thing doesn't click with her....she flat doesn't get that. IQ of maybe 88, IMO.

I usually say nobody called ( if true).

This silly double negative, wertn't and stuff is nutz.

                Nobody called

                Didn;t anybody call ?

yes equals no, but I hate the language and have to reverse the answer to Angela speak.

Age 16. If you pass the steps as quickly as you can, you can be driving by yourself at age 16 and 8 months. That's in Ontario at least. I've heard Alberta is even younger or that they once were younger, but don't quote me on that. And as for Quebec, they're the most liberal so it wouldn't surprise me if they were even younger than that.

guys...practice is the key in learning and remembering. The brain erases the information we don't use and also none of you studied spanish or french for "two years"...it was at best an average of 3 hours a week over a two years period...which is really nothing.

                                                  Hmmm.

It's been about 20 years since I built a pine derby car for the boy scouts,
Haven't been hunting for about 9 years.
Haven't changed the oil in my cars since I was 18.
I haven't played tetherball since the 6th grade.
I haven't had to go outside and find a 'switch' for my parents to whoop my ass with since I was maybe 7-8.
Haven't used a VCR or cassette tape player for at least 10 years.
Haven't danced the macarena since '96.
Haven't heard 'ice ice baby' in forever, but I still know all the words.
I haven't been back to my hometown since i left for college back in '96, but I still know every single inch of that town.

So, if our brain erases all of this information that I don't use, then how come I still know how to do them?

there's more then one type of memory...for example you are confusing the procedural memory with the semantic memory.

the long-term memory is based on the IMPORTANCE of the information, IMPORTANCE which is based on how often do you use that information. Don you remember when Napoleon was born ? No. Did your read about it ? Yes. Can you Google it , read it again and forget again the information in one week ? Yes. But if you constantly remind yourself when Napoleon was born for few months, you will remember that piece of information for a long time, maybe even for the rest of your life.

im just being curious but what is the average american university's entrance requirements?....[/QUOTE]

A very good question. As I understand it Canadians can go to college ( I think you call it University basically free).

We have Community colleges ( junior colleges would be another name) that are inexpensive and accept anyone ( even without a HS diploma), they often have a lot of non-serious classes like Tennis and crafts....not meant to be a University.

The next level is like state schools...

                                                          UCLA
                                                          CSU
                                                          UConn
                                                          etc.

                                                          The top Schools...

                                                          Yale
                                                          Harvard
                                                          MIT

                                                          etc.

They don't field a good basketball team

It is tough to get into a place like Yale or MIT ( very tough) ...you get in by your academic excellence ( in High school), some can get a scholarship but not many...it can be 30k a year to go to Yale and such.

Then there are sports schools like say UNLV ten years ago, or Gonzaga, etc,

I'd rather my surgeon came from Yale instead Gonzaga.

the one thing i like about the american post secondary system is that you can learn things like history and economics at a college and that if i understand correctly you can get whatever you get at a community college and then transfer to a university....
