#72OMG, my advice may not be shit, but don't go to those damn meetings. All that crap is so depressing & just makes it worse.
I had to take a drug & alcohol class because of a DUI. They fukin talk about drugs so damn much & all these lifeless boring ex-addicts talking about it. They are so lifeless & the only time a glimmer of light comes in their dead eyes is when they are talking about the feeling when they were using. Fuk, it's terrible. I had to stop & get an 8ball on the way home after being subjected to these fuks.Comment -

#78On my 18th birthday I deposited $300 into a poker room. I got it up to $2k and then lost it. Shortly there after, $200 more. Then $300 more. Then some in a sportsbook, etc. Over the course of about 5 months I ended up losing about $4k. The best thing that could ever happen to me happened. My parents saw fishy transactions on my bank statement and they did some research and eventually found out what I was into. I stopped. It felt great.
My problem was never a lack of ability to pick, or to play poker. I can summarize my problem into 2 things:
1) I didn't feel that the amount I was playing with was significant. Doubling your funds over the course of a year is an AMAZING investment, but how many people do you think deposit $100 and would be happy to turn that into just $200 over the course of a year? People want to play for something that they feel has meaning.
2) I was afraid to lose. It's not possible to make a sound investment when you are emotionally unstable.
After stopping, I ended up getting a degree, nice job, etc. About two years ago I deposited $5k into a sportsbook. That $5k is now $15k. It's also never been below $4k and never above $17k. I would argue that my ability to pick hasn't gotten any better.
The differences?
1) I don't play poker. I recognize that I don't have the ability to keep the level of calmness that is necessary, so I just don't do it.
2) I recognize the earning potential of the dollar. Even though $5k isn't much to some people, I recognize that by doubling it every year it will skyrocket.
3) If I were to lose my entire bankroll tomorrow my financial situation would not be hurt at all. I think this is the most important one.
4) I do it for fun. I hope that I make money, but that is not the main purpose. As such, if I were to blow $5k over the course of 3 or 4 years I would consider that a pretty good investment for the amount of fun it brought me.
Hopefully you'll do the right thing.Comment -

#79Grind it out, that is very inspirational. I do not think i can do not it though, i am too emotionally unstable. If I lose a couple big bets in a row (pots or sports bets) i feel like i have to get back to even. Now understand i know this is illogical and TERRIBLE strategy yet i can't help the feeling i have. It's like i can't control it even though i know i should be able to do.Comment -

#84I have always bet for fun and never in my life risked money where if I lost it would make a difference in my life. I am a very small bettor but have the ability to bet a lot of money but it doesn't interest me one bit to bet large. I would rather invest my money in property and other investments. I do always need to be in the game, I bet 365 days a year and never take time off. I can't imagine betting with money where it made a difference in my life if I lost...המוסד

If you have a $1,000 bankroll you should be making $10 - $30 bets max. If you lose a $10 bet, who cares?Comment -

Since you gamble with a purpose now and bankroll management, that does make it different i would agree.

#104i know i shouldn't care, this is no joke though, i at one point had a bankroll over $10,000 on pokerstars and i started off playing a 5/10 limit session, after chasing my losses from that session all day my account was drained to zero. i went from a $200 loss (only 2% OF MY BANKROLL, 2% of my bankroll should not of bothered me that much) to losing an entire account worth more than ten grand. On top of that i had a 5k check on the way, i emailed stars and told them to cancel it and fund my account. I had it the next day and I lost all 5k within 2 hours at 100/200 limit.
I still have the voided 5k check, would of been the biggest check i had ever cashed, if only i had cashed it.
Study the Kelly Criterion and learn it and understand it to a freaking tee. I don't recommend that you apply it verbatim, but you need to know it. Once you know every last drop of it, you will have a completely new view of gambling. You will hopefully no longer have the urge to make ridiculously large bets, to chase, etc.Comment -

#105OMG this is horrible to read. Im sad for your situation and hope you find it in you to fix it before it breaks you. I can definitely sympathize with your situation and can see myself there in a parallel universe. Anything in excess is a bad thing with any aspect of life. You should just close out your credit cards, get prepaid accounts and put someone like a wife or parent in charge of your finances with your supervision. Im not the religious type but ill pray for you man, your post is one of the saddest and most honest things Ive ever come across. BEST OF LUCK OMG!Comment
