Tax returns: Do you know anyone getting back thousands more than they paid in??
Fishhead's tax question reminds of a related one..

Do you know anyone getting back thousands more than they paid?

For example, a guy I know is getting back nearly $7500 and he paid nowhere near that. (that number is what his tax return amount for all taxes, states and local included.)

The guy makes low 20's max, 3 kids, a wife at home (who doesn't work) and owns house (no mortgage). He bought a car in 2009 and I think made a few charitable donations..

Did his taxes with a free online service and it seems that he qualifies for a bunch of new tax breaks?

At most he actually had a few thousand buck deducted from his paychecks, yet after all is said an done he getting nearly seven and a half dimes.

Another example is woman I know who one full time job and custody of two kids, does not own a home, and receives child support from the ex. I don't know what she is getting back this year, but in previous years she got some BIG TIME credits and got back thousands more than she paid in..

Earned income credit? What exactly is that? Is this basically the government saying that because you have kids and you are busy tending to them, you therefore are qualified to receive money back based on the money you would have paid in taxes but didn't due to having to pick them up at little league? So soccer moms are getting money back in taxes they would have paid if they would have been working instead of parental duties? They actually earn credit for that? Isn't that like paying them to have kids? And why is the money coming out of my pocket?

What you are describing in your last paragraph is actually the Child Tax Credit.. the EITC is basically a tax credit for people who are working but not making much money.. they essentially end up having a negative income tax rate. People can qualify for both credits.

The 2009 auto purchase earned him a tax credit, but the guy you described is getting most of his money from, as Sinister described the EITC.

The EITC was created to give low income families a way to compensate for their low salary/pay.
