My buddy said he cheated on taxes?
He put down he spent 1,000 on school fees and got it all back in refunds. He said since it's only 1,000 odds of getting caught are low. Thoughts?

Even if they catch it its pretty easy to come up with 1,000 in school expenses. I spend 600 a semester in books alone,

$1,000 now in your pocket, vs having to pay back $1,200 tops if you get caught?

If he is actually in school he should be safe.

To claim school expenses you need a Form 1098-T from your school.

audits go back 3 years....is he is doing it for school he is doing it in other respects. Tell him good luck with that considering 5% of the population will experience a preliminary audit.

Not when u file online, u don't need shit. My fiancé was able to enter her school info without the form, school hasn't sent it yet. She looke up exactly how much she spent

Only places like H n R block ask for receipts for everything. Most tax places take your word for everything you say. There not going to get audited, you will.

you dont need it to file online obviously, but when the IRS checks it out, they will bury you easily when they dont have the form from your school!

What is his AGI? If it is less than 120k there is less than a 3% chance he even finds his way into the audit pool. It just isn't worthwhile to audit low(er) income taxpayers except to deter this kind of practice.

Are you insane? When the IRS gets the online filing they will check to see if the school issued a 1098-T to that social security number. If there is no form filed and your buddy showed an expense in his tax return he will be in big trouble.

His chances of being audited are astronomically low. Not impossible but as close to it as you can get. And if he is caught he should say he made a mistake and pay the amount plus interest.

I can tell you one thing posting this on the internet doesn't help your odds. That's all I can really say about anything you said.

They reward well for school obviously. % years ago I spent $5700 on my baseball team for equipment and uniforms and other essentials. Had reciepts for every dime spent and H&R Block said it was worth an additional $87 in charitable contributions towards my return.

only 1% of the US is audited so he already has that in his favor. Not the smartest habit to get into, but hey why not steal from the country that you live in?

Wasn't there a story where a 4 year old received $8,000 for 1st time homebuyer credit? If they do catch up with him, it's usually not right away. To me, there's something to be said about sleeping well at night.
