Why is there a "bullpen" in baseball?

People joke all the time about how relievers sleep on the job, dick around when they aren't pitching, etc. Well, they're able to get away with it in large part because they aren't in the dugout with everyone else. Modern-day ballparks aren't structured like the old Tiger Stadium or Wrigley Field, where the bullpen is still a part of the action. Players can basically go into hiding these days when they're not warming up.

I feel like a lot of the struggles you see are because guys aren't connected to the game at all, then all of a sudden, their number is called and they need to get focused. Can you imagine NFL reserves sitting off in a tunnel somewhere? Or NBA bench players having their own private box that they come from when they check into a game? I realize relievers need an area to warm up before they come in, but does that mean they have to be housed in a location that is so disconnected from the game itself?

You're just mad you lost your bet. Do you really need the concept of the bullpen described to you?

    I lost a bet?

Re-read the post (if you even bothered in the first place). I'm not saying there shouldn't be a bullpen. I'm wondering why it has to be out beyond the field of play, detached from everything that is going on in the game.

Well, now I lost a bet a few seconds ago (ironically thanks to a reliever) -- but the point still stands and had nothing to do with me starting this thread.

they are cocky too. how many times have you seen a reliever come in and throw 3 straight balls? tons of times, because they have an inflated perception that the batters will swing at their crappy pitches outside the strike zone.

It's very very very rare when "all of a sudden their number gets called" and those are due to injuries to the pitcher in at the time. The specialization of this era has made it that all but one or two if these guys already know when their role is approaching.

If there was no bullpen in baseball the teams will not swing at many pitches and try to wear out the starter so they can pound him in late innings. So there is a reason bullpens exist.

You ever hear of John Smoltz But basically it makes sense to have a bull pen or you would need to run pitchers out there to warm up wasting valuable time. Baseball isnt like other sports that sub hard to compare.

When you put bullpens near the action, like Tampa/Cubs you restrict how many of those fouline seats you can add. rather push the bullpen into the outfield, and you can stack seats on top of the players.

Actually he was a starter then he became a closer when he had shoulder surgery and he finished his career as a starter.

Shit it has always just been about business. Seating pricing dictates the shit out in the boonies. Too much interference and obstruction up front also.

Keep em out in the power alleys. Fukks are mostly crazy of some sort anyway and better kept out of the mains.

exactly my point. he needed to recover from shoulder surgery to become a starter again.

basically pitchers are relievers because they're not good enough to start.

Also if they dont have a good arensal of pitches, bascially they just have one good pitch...which is typically their fastball.

do you even know why he started this thread? it's because he had money on seattle and their relievers, simply put, suck.

it's not like he wants to have a discussion, it's his way of ranting (in his mind) in a clever way.

but the bottom line is relievers struggle not because of the isolation of bullpen or what not but most relievers just aren't good.

What in the hell are you talking about?

    I had money on Seattle?

FTR, Seattle's relievers weren't the problem today -- it was their defense.

I've made dozens of threads on relievers.

I like to talk baseball. I know that goes beyond most of the monkeys on this forum who are only interested in the money they're making -- or more importantly, losing.

Next time I'll make sure to stay on topic and avoid any non-gambling discussion. Jeezus.

it was just the timing of your two threads one right after another in the 9th inning of seattle vs cleveland game.

you have the right to think however you want, i have the right to think how ever i want.

besides this is the players talk. don't get your panties twisted...

I have a thread with tracked plays. I had no bet on Seattle other than the TT under which was dead about 10 minutes into the game and it was just a 1U play.

You said "it was just the timing of your two threads one right after another in the 9th inning of seattle vs cleveland game." The threads were started way before that. You claim I had a bet on Seattle. I didn't. Anything else?

I wonder how relievers do in away games in Wrigley compared to other places. San Diego's old stadium would be another place to look at. I don't know where to find this info though. On the basic premise, you make a good point. However to counter, check out historical SP and RP numbers
    Relievers - http://bit.ly/12q5Zxu
    Starters - http://bit.ly/13CTm1s
Looks like relievers have gotten better and better (even more so than starters). Maybe this is mainly due to 6th/7th/8th guys getting significantly better than previously, but idk. Could be biased because we see highlights of every game nowadays rather than back in the day.
